What is clarifying?
• Clarify is when you stop to make
the sure the meaning of the text
is clear to you as a reader.
• Clarify is when you use various
strategies to figure out the
meaning of the text.
What is monitor?
• Monitor is when you stop to make
sure you understand what you are
reading.
• Monitor is very similar to
questioning but monitor focuses
on making sure you understand.
When do you monitor/clarify a
text?
• As a reader, you can monitor/
clarify a text DURING reading.
• As a reader, you can monitor/
clarify a text AFTER reading.
• In other words, monitor/clarify
the text during and after reading.
How do you monitor/clarify?

• Ask yourself if what you are


reading makes sense.
• If it does not, re-read it!
• Look at the pictures for clues.
• Keep reading for context clues.
• Ask a friend.
Questions to monitor/clarify a
text?
• What is happening in the story?
• What clues have led you to think
that?
• Does that make sense?
• Does this text remind you of
anything you already know?

questions during and after reading.

understanding.
