DEFINE TECHNOLOGY

Technology aims to educate readers about the advent of technology and its current
applications. Today, our lives are far more convenient and easy, with everything we need at our
fingertips. Though we may take technology for granted, we need to remember that what we have
today is the culmination of hundreds of years of scientific progress and breakthrough. Inventions
such as the internet and mobile phones have changed the world forever. The human lifespan, in
the 21st century, has greatly increased due to advancements in medical technology and medicine.
However, less than 200 years ago, having a fever or a cut can become life-threatening very
quickly. Vaccines or treatments for many diseases did not exist as well. On the industrial front,
progress was slow and time-consuming. Transportation was rather primitive and prohibitively
expensive; ensuring that only the rich and famous could use it. Read on to explore how the
advent of technology changes our lives forever.

Technology is born with the accomplishment of scientific progress and breakthroughs. However,
the exact definition of technology varies according to context.

 Technology can be defined as the application of scientific knowledge to change

and manipulate the human environment.
 Technology can also be defined as the branch of knowledge that caters to the
creation and use of technical means and their relationship with society and
environment, using engineering, applied and pure science.
 The sum of ways in which social groups provide themselves with material objects
of their civilization.
IDENTIFYING SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

Finding similarities and differences while learning helps students make connections to previous
knowledge and retain information better. Some ways to help students with this core strategy
include finding metaphors and analogies and classifying ideas or objects based on the
characteristics or features.

 Wordle
 IHMC Concept Map Tool
 ReadWriteThink Interactive Compare/Contrast Map

Wordle could be used as an activity after classroom students each research and write about a
similar topic. The students could copy and paste their papers into Wordle’s “Create” page. This
will create a “word cloud” based on the words that appear the most in the text. Next, they could
change the font, color, and layout of their word cloud and print them out. Then, the word clouds
could be compared and contrasted. The class may find underlying ideas that are similar
throughout their papers.

The technology works as a catalyst through which many changes occur in the learning
approaches, teaching methodologies, research arena, in the work environment and in the use of
information and knowledge. Helping students to learn using technological tools rather than using
conventional techniques has become more popular in the 21st century in colleges and schools in
the domain of computer science. Integration of technological tools will help teachers to the
international requirement to use technology-based teaching and learning tools instead of
traditional teaching methods. Most researchers agree on the significance of the use of
technological tools in different education systems. However, current state-of-the-art depicts that
there is no comprehensive study that provides an analysis of different technological tools e.g.
computer-based, games based, mobile based, and multimedia technologies used in education.
This paper provides a comprehensive review of several of the most popular teaching
methodologies (collaborative, active learning, problem-based, inductive teaching method) and
technological tools i.e. computer-based (ICT, CAI, CBI), games based (serious games, web
games, micro-games, videos games), mobile based (laptop, PDAs, tablets, mobile phones),
online learning tools (flipped classroom, web MOOCs) and multimedia technologies.
