Activity and Assessment Sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
Formulating Problem for Investigation

Mother loves to plant. She waters her plants every

day. I observed that the plants are healthy and green.
During summer vacation, mother went home to
her province for three weeks. She asked me to water
the plants. However, I forgot to water the plants for
two weeks. I noticed that the plants withered
(nalanta/layung).
Maybe, it’s because of the water. Does water
affect the changes in the growth of plants? p

SAQ-1: What were the observations of Ben about the plants when watered every day?
SAQ-2: What were his observations when the plants were not watered for two weeks?
SAQ-3: What question did he form out of the observations he made?

Scientific Problem

A scientific problem is a question that can be investigated or tested through an

experiment to give us valid results. It is usually based on observation of things and situations.
A good problem can be investigated (tested).

Formulating a Scientific Problem

A scientific problem is always written in a question form. It can be written following these
formats:
How does_________________ affect __________________?

What is the effect of _______________ on ______________?

Observations made by Ben about his mother’s plants:

Observation 1 : The plants are healthy and green when watered every day.
Observation 2 : The plants withered when not watered for two weeks.

Ben was able to formulate the following problems because he was able to make
correct observations.

Problem: How does water affect the growth of plants?

What is the effect of water on the growth of plants?

SAQ-4: What is a scientific problem?

SAQ-5: Before we can formulate a problem, what should we do first?

Let’s Practice! (Write your answer on the separate sheets provided.)

A. Given the following observations, encircle the letter of the best problem statement.

1. A bar of chocolate is placed in warm area, it begins

to melt or becomes soft. But, when placed in a cold
area like the refrigerator, it becomes hard again.
A. How does the chocolate affect the temperature?
B. How does the temperature affect the chocolate?

2. Roy made two parachutes with toy soldier tied in

each. The two parachutes differ in size. He observed
that it took longer for the bigger parachute to land
compared to the small parachute.
A. What is the effect of the size of the parachute on
the speed of landing of the toy soldier?
B. What is the effect of the speed of landing on the
size of the parachute?

3. Mona observed that a spoonful of chocolate

powder dissolved faster in a glass of hot water
than in a glass of cold water.
A. How does the temperature (hot or cold) of water
affect the rate of solubility of the chocolate
powder?
B. How does the rate of solubility of the chocolate
powder affect the temperature of the?
hot cold
SOLUBILITY is the ability of a
material to dissolve

B. Write a scientific problem for each observation. Follow the correct format in writing a
problem.

1. Observations: One tablespoon of sugar dissolves faster in a glass of hot

water than in a glass of cold water.
Problem:
__________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________

2. Observations: The tomato plant in the big pot grows taller than the tomato
plant in a small pot.
Problem:
__________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________

3. Observations: The plant in pot A that receives enough sunlight grows taller
than the plant in pot B that was kept in a big box.
Problem:
__________________________________________________________
