5. A metal bar at a temperature of 300 is placed in room at a

constant temperature of 10 . If after 20 min the temperature f
the bar is 50 , a. find the temperature of the bar at any time t.
(b) How long will it take for the bar to reach a temperature of 75
.

6. The population of a certain country is known to increase at a

rate proportional to the number of people presently living in the
country. If after 4 years the population has doubled, and after 3
years the population is 20,000, find the number of people
initially living in the country.

initially living in the country.

7. If the population of a country doubles in 50 years, in how many

years will it treble under the assumption that the rate of increase
is proportional to the number of inhabitants?

8. The population of a certain country is known to increase at a

rate proportional to the number of people presently living in the
country. If after 3 years the population has doubled, and after 4
years the population is 50,000, find the number of people
initially living in the country.

9. A certain radioactive material is known to decay at a rate

proportional to the amount present. If initially there is 500mg of
the material present and if after 2 years it is observed that 30
percent of the original mass has decayed. Determine the time
necessary for 15% of the original mass to decay.

10. The population of a certain municipality increases at a rate equal

to the square root of the population. If the present population is
90,000, how long will it take for the population to reach
160,000?

11. A deposit places $10,000 in a certificate of deposit account
which pays 7% interest per annum, compounded continously.
How much in the account after 2 years?

12. A woman places $2000 in an account for her child upon his
birth. Assuming no additional deposits or withdrawals, how
much will the child have at his eighteenth birthday if the bank
pays 5% interest per annum, compounded continuously.

13. A tank initially holds 100gal of a brine solution containing 50 lb

of salt. At t = 0, fresh water is poured into the tank at the rate of
8gal/min, while the well stirred mixture leaves the tank at the
same rate. How much salt is in the tank after 15 min?

14. A tank initially holds 200L fresh water. At t = 0, a brine solution
containing 2 kg of salt per liter is poured into the tank at the rate
of 6 L/min, while the well stirred mixture leaves the tank at the
same rate. Find the amount of salt in the tank after 12 min.

15. A 100 gal tank is filled with brine containing 60lb of dissolved
salt. Water runs into the tank at the rate of 1gal/min and the
mixture, kept uniform by stirring, runs out at the rate 2gal/min.
How much salt is in the tank after 1h?

16. A 100 gal tank intially contains 30 gal of fresh water. At t = 0, a
brine solution containing 2 lb of salt per gallon is poured into
the tank at the rate of 5 gal/min, while the well stirred mixture
leaves the tank at the rate of 3 gal/min. Find the amount of salt
in the tank (a) after 20 min and (b) at the moment of overflow.

17. The approximate radius of the earth is 6, 370 km and g, the
acceleration due to gravity, is 9.81 m/s2. Find the escape
velocity of an object projected from the earth’s surface, that is,
the minimum velocity imparted to it so it will never return.

18. An object of mass 5 slugs falls from a height of 100 feet with an
initial velocity of 10ft/s. If the air resistance is proportional to
the velocity of the object and the limiting velocity is known to
be 40 ft/s, find (a) an expression for the velocity of the stone at
any time t and (b) an expression for the position of the object at
any time t .

19. A boat is being towed at the rate of 12mi/h. At the instant (t = 0)
that the towing line is cast off, a man in the boat begins to row
in the direction of motion, exerting a force of 20lb. If the
combined weight of the man and boat is 480 lb and the
resistance (in pounds) is equal to 5v, where v is measured in ft/s,
find the speed of the boat at any time t.

20. An 16-lb object is attached to the end of a spring. It comes to

rest in its equilibrium position, thereby stretching the spring
1foot. The object is then pulled down 6 inches below its
equilibrium position and released at t = 0 with an initial velocity
of 1ft/sec, directed downward. Neglecting the resistance of the
medium and assuming that no external forces are present,
determine the amplitude, period and frequency. Find also the
displacement of the object as a function of time.
