1.1 Overview
The Hunar Foundation (THF) is one of the largest not-for-profit organisations in Pakistan that
offers technical and vocational training to youth across the country. Founded by a dedicated
group of individuals. Board members comprise dedicated individuals, associated with The
Citizens Foundation (TCF), The Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture, The Kidney
Centre, Karachi Relief Trust, Chal Foundation and the Indus Hospital.

1.2 Technical Education: Key to Socio-Economic Development

Pakistan ranks 150, from a total of 189 countries, on the
Human Development Index (2018), lagging far behind other
developing countries, as well as among South Asian
countries, by comparison1. With approximately 70 per cent
population under 35 years of age and expected number of
years of schooling at an average of only 7.8 years, the
country faces a major crisis. Additionally, opportunities in
the public and private sectors are insufficient to cater to this
large segment of population deprived of both quality
education and subsequently prevented from obtaining
employment opportunities. DMS Technical Institute, Karachi

Sociologists, analysts, non-government organisations and international donor agencies agree

that this unfortunate situation is highly disruptive to the social and security fabric of the
country, as well as the region. Many of its implications are evident in youth in general, who
display negative character traits and behaviour, observed to be frequently involved in
destructive activities and becoming increasingly radicalized. However, this young population
also opens new horizons for progress and development, provided these youth are equipped
with the right tools and led towards a positive direction.

Benefits of Vocational Training

2 Organisational Profile
THF offers students a high quality learning environment of international standards. The
courses are designed to meet industry requirements that ensure a high degree of
employability for graduates.

2.1 The Vision

Creating a new cadre of skilled Pakistanis with internationally recognized technical
qualifications, opening up a new world of opportunities.

THF envisions ‘A Skilled

Pakistan’ with the prime goal
focused on Pakistani youth
developing into well rounded
individuals, equipped with
quality technical and
vocational skills, as well as
instilled with life skills and
possessing positive social traits
and values. THF strongly
SDAM Technical Institute
believes that the Pakistani youth have the potential to not only improve their own lives as
individuals, as well as their families, but also contribute to the overall well-being of the society
at large, and consequently improve the socio-economic conditions of the country.

Training programs at THF offer youth the opportunity to enhance and develop technical and
vocational skills, certified by the Government of Pakistan (the Sindh/Punjab Trade & Testing
Board), as well as by the international training institute, City & Guilds (C&G) based in the
United Kingdom, through which youth have a platform to explore job opportunities, both
within the country, as well as abroad.

2.2 The Mission: To Promote our Youth

 To initiate a movement to skill the motivated illiterate, semi-literate and literate:
 To provide technical training ‘with a difference’ in quality of skills as well as ethical,
social and moral values.

4
 To be a self-sustainable model by providing marketable skills that are internationally
accredited and will help improve the image of the trades in society and are
customer-oriented and industry-specific.

2.3 Organisational Objective

The key objective for THF is to provide high school graduates with quality technical and
vocational training skills that will provide them quality technical and vocational education.

The strategic aim for THF is to align its vision with the goal, that is, to increase the present
capacity of students from 5,000 to 12,000 students, by year 2020, with a further increase of
100,000 to 150,000, by year 2030, annually.

However, the challenge to achieve our goal is far too complex, the gap between what we
intend to achieve and have achieved thus far, too wide and the need for us to do the work,
too urgent, to fulfil by ourselves alone. Hence, we require other organisations to join hands
with us, by participating in our endeavour and to assist us in achieving success, so that we can
go beyond our expected target.

THF presently comprises six training institutes operating successfully in the country, with
expansion plans currently underway, for increasing the number of institutes, which include
