Research Essay

Introduction
The meaning of this essay is how important and why research is needed when
producing a music video. This will discuss the benefits of research and all the
research that needs to occur. For example primary and secondary research and
also quantitative and qualitative research.

Primary Research
First of all I’m going to dive in and explain to you what primary research
actually is. Primary research is something that is first hand. Something that you
have conducted. Primary research includes methods like focus groups and
surveys. So usually when doing primary research you will aim to hand out
some surveys to people who you think could become a future customer. This is
called a target audience. A target audience (if you don’t know) is a target group
of people. For example a target audience will usually be a certain gender, a
certain age group like 21-25 and you will also look into customers interests.
So during our project this is some of the primary research that we have already
conducted. For starters we have already handed out and received answers
from surveys that we had typed up. This is for our music video which is to the
song “DayNnite” by Kid Cudi. Anyway for our first survey we just wanted very
brief answers from very simple questions. Also we didn’t want too many
questions as we thought that if someone didn’t have a clue about any of the
questions they would get very bored and for us it would a waste of time. So on
our survey there was a total amount of 5 question. The perfect amount to get
a small taste on what people think of our song and music video. Our questions
were:
1. Do you know the song “DayNnite” by Kid Cudi?
2. If you do know the song, Do you like it?
3. Would you say you’re a fan of Kid Cudi?
4. Do you like the “DayNnite” music video?
5. How would you feel about a Modern, fun and refreshed version of the
“DayNnite” music video?
So they were the 5 questions. 5 easy yes or no answers and this method
worked perfectly. The feedback we got back from this survey was absolutely
amazing and will help so much in the long run of our project. We asked a group
of 20 teenagers aged from 16-18 these and I will now quickly run through with
the percentages of yes to no answers on every question so you can see how
much this could help.
1. 90% said yes, 10% said no.
2. 85% said yes, 15% said no.
3. 20% said yes, 80% said no.
4. 60% said yes, 40% said no.
5. 90% said yes, 40% said no.
As you can see these answers show a clear pattern. They show that a lot of
people know of the song and also shows that the majority of people who have
listened to it like the song very much which is always a good sign. But it also
shows that maybe Kid Cudi could have been a one hit wonder as no many
people are a fan of his others song and just him in general as a music artist. But
the most important answer feedback that we received was for question 5. This
showed that people do want a new and refreshed version of Kid Cudi’s
“DayNnite” music video. This was our first bit of research that we had done
and it showed positive signs considering what the aim of our project was.

Secondary Research
Again before anything I am going to dive deep and explain to you what
secondary research is. Secondary research is research something that is not
done first hand. Something that is already existing and usually research that
someone has already done and your pretty much stealing there info.
Secondary research is very useful, a lot cheaper and a lot less time consuming
as it is not done first hand. Most secondary research will be found online for
example looking at statistical databases, government report and maybe a bit
more relevant to our music video idea who owns the copyright rights to songs.
For our project We have already conducted two methods of secondary
research. The two methods we have decided to start off with are looking at
existing stats and looking at who owns the copyright rights to “DayNnite”. I will
start off with explaining what stats we have looked into since starting our
project. We have looked at the number of views and likes of the original
“DayNnite” music video which had 161 million views and 1.5 million likes. This
is a huge amount of views and likes and clearly showed that the original music
video was a huge success so we decided to look into it more. The original music
video wasn’t anything to complex but was very simple, fun and easy to watch
which explain the broad amount of views and likes. This showed us that we do
not have to make our new and refreshed music video as modern as we thought
and that we should add our own little spice to our music video and really make
it more fun and refreshed but also to keep it simple as there is evidence that
this is effective and this is why research is so important as it teaches us not to
make simple mistakes that could cost us and it also makes everything a whole
lot easier.
Our second method of secondary research was looking at who own the
copyrights claims to “DayNnite”. We looked on YouTube and there was too
many names to tie it down to one, so we have messaged Kid Cudi hoping for a
reply, So he could make it clear who the copyright rights belong to. So until
then we cannot nail down who owns what as we cannot find it. So far though
this is as far as we have got with our secondary research but we do look to do
more.

Quantitative and Qualitative Research

Quantitative and Qualitative Research is very overlooked use of research and a
lot of people do just skip past it. If you do not know what quantitative and
qualitative research is I will now explain. Quantitative and Qualitative research
are almost complete opposites. Quantitative research uses stats and usually
has a larger sample size whereas qualitative research use descriptions and
observes the description and also will have a smaller sample size.
Unfortunately we have not carried out any of this research yet but hope to in
the near future. I will tell you some of the methods we are looking to use
though. For quantitative research we want to carry out a survey. But no a
normal easy survey. We want to conduct and carry out a longitudinal survey,
this is a survey that is done over a longer period and not done in one day. This
time period could differ from a week to years. The reason we want to do this is
so we can keep an eye on the market trend and look at customer satisfaction.
For our qualitative research method, we would like to carry out a focus group.
If you do not know what a focus group is, they are a research method where
you gather a group of people together and give them a topic to talk about. For
our focus group we would ask them a question of if they would like a refreshed
music video to “DayNnite”. We would then listen to them discuss and closely
observe and listen to every key detail that they are giving to us.

Production Research
Production research that will look into what equipment will be used in our
project. For example props and cameras. The camera we will be using is a Sony
X70 camera. Also we have decided that we are going to have a variety of
lighting as we think it will link back to the title “DayNnite”. The props we want
to use haven’t been decided as of yet though and we will continue to think
about what props would suit and make our music video better.

Why is research so important?

As you can see above a lot of research needs to be done when producing
something important. Also people will see it as boring and maybe it is but I
know for a fact, any project with a lot of research is one hundred times better
than one without. So it may be time consuming and might take a bit out of
your bank account but coming from me, I can guarantee you that it is worth it.
Not only for your benefit but for the peoples benefits. When doing research
even though you are thinking about yourself and your project your doing
everything for your customers and that’s why its so important to keep a loyal
fanbase and how do you do that you may ask. Research is the answer.
