MATHEMATICS 9- Q4- WK 4
WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING RIGHT TRIANGLES

NAME:_________________________ SECTION: _______________

MELC: The learner uses trigonometric ratios to solve real-life problems

involving right triangles. (M(GE-IV-e-1)

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. solve real-life problems involving right triangles using trigonometric ratios;
and
2.formulate and solve real- life problems involving right triangles.

The concepts of trigonometric ratios which were discussed in your

previous lesson are very important in solving word problems involving
right triangles. Many real-life problems on right triangles can be anchored on these
concepts. The knowledge and skills you gained in your previous lesson will be used
to learn and understand fully this new lesson.

Before you proceed to the new lesson, let us recall these important concepts
by doing the succeeding activities.

Activity 1: Match Me!

Given the figures below, use an arrow to connect each concept found in column A
with the correct ratio found in column B.

Activity 2: What Am I?

In the following illustrations, identify whether angle A is an angle of elevation or an

angle of depression.

Mathematics 9 Learners Material pp 467-468

Answer the following questions:

1. How did you find activities 1and 2?

2. Did the activities help you remember the trigonometric ratios as well as the
angle of elevation and angle of depression? Explain.

3. How did you determine the angle of elevation and angle of depression?

Now that you’ve recalled the trigonometric ratios and the concepts of angle of
elevation and angle of depression, you are now ready to apply these concepts in
solving real life problems involving right triangles.

B. Word Problems Involving Right Triangles

Examples:

1. A ramp for unloading a moving truck, has an angle of elevation of 30°. If the
top of the ramp is 0.9 m above the ground level, then find the length of the
ramp.

Solution :

Make a drawing of the situation.

The side which is opposite to 90 degree is known as

hypotenuse, the side which is opposite to θ is known as
opposite side and the remaining side is known as adjacent
side. AC is the hypotenuse; AB is the opposite side and BC is
the adjacent side.

In the given problem, we have to find the length of hypotenuse

given the length of opposite side. Since the hypotenuse is part
of the problem then we can use the sine ratio.

𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒
sin 𝜃 =
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
𝐴𝐵
sin 30 =
𝐴𝐶
1 0.9
=
2 𝐴𝐶
𝐴𝐶 = 0.9(2)
𝐴𝐶 = 1.8 m

Therefore, the length of the ramp is 1.8 m.

2. An airplane is flying at a certain height above the ground. The distance along the
ground from the airplane to an airport is 6 kilometers. The angle of depression of the
airplane to the airport is 33.690

Writer: Jeson F. Gumanoy Reviewers: 1. Hermie O. Suazo

Solution:

Make a drawing of the situation.

Given:

Ɵ= 33.69°
Adjacent = 6 km
Opposite = x

Let x as the height of the plane from the

ground.

Since the two legs of the right triangle are part of the problem, the tangent ratio is used. Note
also that the angle of depression is equal to the angle of elevation by the parallel alternate
interior angles theorem.
Formula:
tan Ɵ= opposite
adjacent
tan 33.69° = x
6km
x = (tan 33.69°) (6 km)
x = (0.6667) (6 km)
x = 4 km

Therefore, the height of the airplane from the ground is 4 kilometers.

3. A nursery plants a new tree and attaches a guy wire to help support the tree while its
roots take hold. An eight-foot wire is attached to the tree and to a stake in the ground.
From the stake in the ground the angle of elevation of the connection with the tree is
42º. Find to the nearest tenth of a foot, the height of the connection point on the tree.

A "guy" wire is a support wire used to hold a newly planted tree in place,
preventing it from bending or up-rooting during high winds. The "angle of elevation"
is from the ground up. It is assumed that the tree is vertical, making it perpendicular
with the ground. This problem deals with "opposite" and "hypotenuse" making it a
sine problem.

𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒
Then, sin 𝜃 =
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒

Sin 42° = x
8
0.669 = x
8
X = 5.4 ft.

Therefore, the height of the connection point on the tree is 5.4ft.

Activity 3: Find Me!

Directions: Given below are pictures depicting real-life situations. Find what is
asked.
Show your solution, then answer the questions that follow.

Find the height of the flagpole.

Questions:

1. How did you find the activity?

2. Does it help you reinforce your learning about trigonometric ratios and and the
concept of angles of elevation and depression? How?

The previous activity allows you to reinforce your knowledge about the concept of
the angles of elevation and depression where you applied the trigonometric ratios
to solve the problem. These concepts are very important for you to work on the
next activity.

Activity 4. Problem Solving

Directions: Illustrate and solve each of the following problems.

1. A woman is standing on the ground at a point 78ft from the base of a building. The angle
of elevation to the top of the building is 57. To the nearest foot, how high is the building?

2. A man is on top of the building. He observes a car on the road at an angle of 750. If the
building is 30 meters high, how far is the car from the building?

3. A ladder 8 meters long leans against the wall of a building. If the foot of the ladder makes
an angle of 68° with the ground, how far is the base of the ladder from the wall?

4. Adrian is flying a kite. He is holding the end of the string at a distance of 1.5 m
above the ground. If the string is 20 meters long and makes an angle of 400 with the
horizontal, how high is the kite above the ground?

5. A bamboo pole is leaning against a tree. If the height of the tree is 12.3 meters and
the angle made by the pole and the ground is 40 0 , what is the length of the pole?

Questions:
1. How did you find the activity?

2. Did you encounter difficulties while doing the activity? If so, what are they?

3. How did you overcome those difficulties?
