THEORY  AT  GLANCE

!   When  expectancies  are  met,  the  other  person  behavior
are  judged  as  posiTve;  and  when  they  are  violated,  the
behaviors  are  judged  as  negaTve.

!   Di  dalam  conversaTon  dengan  orang  lain,  people  dapat
memprediksi  (not  desire)  respon  dari  orang  yang  diajak
bicara.  KeTka  respon  itu  ternyata  Tdak  sesuai  dengan
prediksinya,  maka  perilaku  itu  dianggap  negaTf;  keTka
sesuai  maka  perilaku  itu  akan  dianggap  posiTf.
Slide 5

There are two types of

expectancies :
! Predictive – predictive expectancy is defining
the communication and interaction
happening within a particular environment or
a context
! Prescriptive- people displaying behaviors
appropriate to the existing environment
EXPECTANCY IN PEOPLE IS DETERMINED
Slide 6

BY THREE FACTORS:
!   INTERACTANT CHARACTERISTICS – this includes
age, sex and other personality traits of the person.

!   INTERPERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS – this

character deals with the relationship that the person
has with the listener

!   ENVIRONMENT – the context refers to the cultural

influence and also the social situation. All these
factors lead to an expectation in behavior and the
listener can conceive the violation from the expected
behavior as positive or negative.
!  These  expectaTons
can  involve  virtually  &
any  nonverbal
behavior,  including
non  verbal  like  eye
contact,  distance,  and
body  angle  !
PROXEMICS (1 feet=30 cm)

! Contoh  Expectancy  ViolaTons  :  Someone

stands  to  close  to  you;  stands  too  far  away;
eye  contact  is  abnormal.  Apakah  perilaku
tersebut  memang  sesuai  dengan
prediksinya?

! Perilaku  itu  dianggap  posiTf,  umumnya  jika
kita  menyukai  orang  tersebut  atau
memiliki  banyak  kesamaan  dengannya.
