Revised Lesson Plan/Research Lesson

Lesson: Square of Binomial

Grade level: Mathematics 7
Strand: Patterns and Algebra
Competencies addressed:

 Use model and algebraic method in squaring a binomial (M7AL-IIe-g1)

 Solve problems involving square a binomial (M7AL-IIg-2)

Prerequisite Concepts and Skills: Multiplying the binomial

About the Lesson:

The concept of special products is first learned formally by the students in Grade 7. In most cases, when this
concept is being learned, students are provided with models of algebraic expressions.

In this lesson, the students are given the dimensions of a square. Their task is to square the first terms, square
the last terms and twice the product of the first and the last terms. In this process, they will be able to discover that the
final answer is always a perfect square trinomial. Students will compute for the square of binomial and learn that if the
given is difference of binomial the answer on the perfect square trinomial will have a negative sign on the middle term.
Objectives: In this lesson, the students are expected to:
 Use model and algebraic method in squaring of a binomial
 Solve problems involving square of binomial.
Instructional Procedure:
A. Problem
The Villa Anna Farm and Resort in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro was inherited by the three siblings
namely Abrylle, Abby, and Albert. Abrylle owned 7hm in length and 7hm in width of the land, while Abby owned
two 7hm in length and 1hm in width of the land. Since Albert sold some of his land to his sisters he only have
1hm in length and 1hm in width. What is the total area inherited by the three siblings? Using the manila paper
distributed to you, how will you be able to represent the piece of land owned by the three siblings by folding the
paper?
Ask the following questions:
 How many different regions are formed? There are 4 different regions.
 What geometric figures are formed? Rectangles and squares are formed as the geometric figure.
 What is the area of each region? 1 hm 2 , 7 hm 2, 7 hm 2and 49 hm 2
 What is the total area of the region? 64hm2
Paper Folding.
1 hm 7 hm
Area: 1 hm 1 sq hm
7 sq. hm. 1 hm
(l + w)2 = (l)2 + 2(l)(w) + (w)2

(7 hm x 1 hm)2 = (7 hm)2 + 2(7 hm)(1 hm) + (1 hm)2 7 sq. hm. 49 sq. hm. 7 hm
7 hm
= (7 hm)2 = 49 hm2
= 2(7 hm)(1 hm) = 14 hm2
= (1 hm)2 = 1 hm2
= 49 hm + 14 hm2 + 1 hm2
2
1 hm 7 hm
= 64 hm2

B. Possible Answers and Solutions

1. What would you do if the longer part is represented by x and the shorter part is represented by 1, what will be its area
if each side of the square increased by 1 unit?
Solutions:
The square of the first dimension x 2, then twice the product of first and second dimensions is 2x, and the square
of the second dimension is 1.
(x + 1)2 = x2 + 2x + 1
1 x
= (x)2 = x2
1 1 x 1
= 2(x)(1) = 2x
= (1)2 = 1
= x2 + 2x + 1 x x x2 x

1 x
2. (x - 2)2 = x2 – 4x + 4 -2 x
-2 4 -2x -2
= (x)2 = x2
= 2(-2)(x) = -4x
= (-2)2 = 4 x -2x x2 x
= x2 – 4x + 4

-2 x

3. (a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2 b a
2 b
= (a)2 = a2 b b ab
= 2(a)(b) = 2ab
= (b)2 = b2
= a2 + 2ab + b2 a ab a2 a

b a

C. Development of Concepts/Discussion/Exploration

For solution 1
The square of the first term is x 2. Twice the product of the first and the second term is 2x. The square of the last
term is 1. Therefore the perfect square trinomial is x 2 + 2x + 1.

For solution 2
The square of the first term is x 2. Twice the product of the first and the second term is -4x. The square of the last
term is 4. Therefore the perfect square trinomial is x 2 - 4x + 4.

For solution 3
The square of the first term is a2. Twice the product of the first and the second term is 2ab. The square of the
last term is b2. Therefore the perfect square trinomial is a2 + 2ab + b2.

D. Practice Exercise

If you will be designing the floor plan of your house, which part of the house would you allot 2 bigger areas, how
about for one bigger portion than the first, and the rest of the parts your house? Why did you consider such?
Make a solution to show total area of your floor plan? Use the scale 1sq.m=1sq. unit?

E. Summary

What did you learn about in this lesson?

a. There are many ways in multiplying a binomial
b. There are patterns in squaring a binomial.
c. The answer of the square of binomial is a perfect square trinomial.

F. Assessment

Square the following binomials using the pattern you just learned
1. (s + 4)2 = s2 + 8s + 16
2
2. (w – 5) = w2 – 10w + 25
2
3. (e – 7) = e2 -14e + 49
4. (2q – 4)2 = 4q2 – 16q + 16
2
5. (3z + 2k) = 9z2 + 12zk + 4k2
