OPENING CEREMONY OF THE EVENT

The 18th Asian Games kicked off on Saturday with a breathtakingly opening

ceremony that showcased Indonesia's beautiful landscapes, rich history, and different

cultures. Here are some highlights from the ceremony, which took place at Jakarta's Gelora

Bung Karno Main Stadium. Indonesian President Joko Widodo made a stunning arrival into

the stadium by riding a motorcycle.

In a video broadcast at the start of the ceremony, the president, who was stuck in

traffic, mounted a motorcycle, and took a shortcut through the city's alleyways. The crowd

erupted in applause when a man dressed in black and wearing a helmet rode into the

stadium. The motorcycle rider waved to the cheering crowd before riding backstage, where,

according to live footage, he removed the president's helmet, revealing him in his suit,

looking sad. He remounted the stage, shook hands with his distinguished guests, and the

ceremony began.

The entire ceremony was set against a massive mountain that resembled the lush

sceneries of Indonesia. The stage's mountain weighed 600 tons and measured 120 meters

in length, 30 meters in width, and 26 meters in height. It featured more than 12,775 actual

plants and flowers spread out across 1,350 square meters, as well as a beautiful cascade

with 70 tons of water tumbling down. It was thought to be the most elaborate set piece ever

seen in a multi-games ceremony. A life-size replica nusantara ship and a 10-meter dazzling

sun, reported to have been built using 122,637 gold mylar disks, also drew the attention of

the audience during the ceremony. The ceremony took a year to plan and cost between 500

and 600 billion Indonesian rupiah, according to local media (34 million to 41 million US

dollars).
