General function/description of Scanners

A
scanner is an input
device that scans
documents that you place inside
of it, for example photographs or
papers. The scanner then scans the
photo creating an electronic image
that goes to the computer. This
file can be viewed and edited
however you would like.

What is a
Scanner?
Old Scanners
The “great-
great-great grandfather” of
scanning was the Pentetelgraph. The
Pentetelgraph was used for transferring
handwriting, signatures and drawing over telegraph
lines. It was most common to be used for signatures in
banking transactions, in the 1860’s.
The Photoradiogram was invented in 1924, allowing people to
send photos overseas. A fun fact about the
Photoradiogram, is that the first ever photo to be sent
overseas, was sent over the Atlantic. The photo was of
Calvin Coolidge, former president, and the photo
was sent from New York to London.
