WELD SYMBOLS

WELD SYMBOLS
Extracts from BS EN 22553:1995
ISO 2553:1992

1. Position of the symbols on drawings

1.1 General
Weld symbol is supposed to consist of minimum 3 objects.
1 : Arrow Line
2a : Reference Line (continuous line)
2b : Identification Line (dashed line)
3 : Welding Symbol
NOTE: The arrow line shall preferably be drawn the same
direction as welding torch.
NOTE: For symmetrical welds, the dash line is unnecessary
and should be omitted.
Figure 1 – Method of representation NOTE: The thickness of lines shall be in accordance with
the thickness of line for dimensioning reference
ISO128 and ISO 3098-1, respectively.

1.3 Position of the reference line

The reference line shall preferably be drawn parallel to the bottom edge of the
drawing, if impossible perpendicular.

2. Symbols and Dimensioning of welds

2.1 General
1) Main dimensions relative to the
cross-section.
2) Weld symbol.
3) Supplementary symbol.
4) Number of weld elements.
5) Length of weld (without end
craters).
6) Staggered intermittent weld (If
necessary).
7) Distance between adjacent
weld elements.

2.2 Weld Symbols

The various categories of joints are characterized by a symbol which, in general, is
similar to the shape of the weld to be made.
The symbol shall not be taken to prejudge the process to be employed.
The elementary symbols are show in Table 1.

n : Number of weld elements.
l : Length of weld (without end craters).
(e) : Distance between adjacent weld elements.

2.5 Supplementary symbols

Elementary symbols may be accompanied by an additional symbol characterizing the
shape of the external surface or the shape of the weld.
The absence of a supplementary symbol means that the shape of the weld surface
does not need to be indicated precisely.
