REPORTER: Good evening, and welcome to ‘NEWS FOR ALL’. Tonight,

we have an exclusive interview with Don Bosco, also known as Saint
John Bosco or the founder of the Salesians. Welcome to the program
John.

JOHN BOSCO: Why thank you Liz, so glad to be here tonight to share
my life story and the story of the Salesians.

REPORTER: Great, now we know you are very popular amongst

Catholics. Tell us a little bit about your background. When and where
were you born?

JOHN BOSCO: Well I was born on the 16 August 1815 near Turin, Italy.

REPORTER: Ok. Now, your childhood can’t all have been full of laughs.
Tell us about your family life when you were growing up.

JOHN BOSCO: My mother’s name was Margaret Occhiena.

REPORTER: And did you face any challenges and difficulties in your
life?

JOHN BOSCO: Yes, like everyone else I faced challenging times. When I
was only two years old my dad sadly passed away leaving my mother to
care for me and my 2 siblings.

REPORTER: So, then your mother was obviously one of your role
models. Who else do you consider to be role models in your life?

JOHN BOSCO: I considered God as a role model in my life, as well as

Father Cafasso, who helped me realize my dream to help young,
rejected boys and Mother Mary.

REPORTER: So, it was through your faith and these role models that
you became a priest. How and why did you begin the Salesians?
JOHN BOSCO: I began the Salesians so that I could help young and
abandoned people to learn a trade and survive in this world.

REPORTER: How did you help the young boys that you looked after?

JOHN BOSCO: I taught them skills that could get them a job or trade
and taught them about God and the Bible.

REPORTER: One of these young boys seemed different from the others. Who
was he?

JOHN BOSCO: He was Dominic Savio. He was a rather bright boy, who
I found in 1854. He always helped others and prayed a lot. He made a
big impact on me. Unfortunately, he died just before his 15 th birthday.

REPORTER: Could you give us some detail on who Mary Mazzarello was
and what she did?

JOHN BOSCO: Mary Mazzarello was a founder of the daughters of Mary

help of Christians. We worked closely together to help young children.

REPORTER: How did the impact of the Salesians and of you help the
community?

JOHN BOSCO: It helped by keeping neglected and abandoned young

boys safe, and by teaching them skills to benefit them in life.

REPORTER: What are the Salesian missions and values today?

JOHN BOSCO: The values are Faith, Community, Excellence and

Learning. The mission is to be of service not authority. We need to be
good servants of Christ.

REPORTER: How do you believe your life inspire others in our global
community.

JOHN BOSCO: I believe it can inspire others to follow me in my

footsteps, and to help others in need.

REPERTER: And could you give some detail on who your

JOHN BOSCO: Yes, well St Mary Mazzarello a great was a founder of the

make sure you conclude the interview by explaining your answer to

Question 6 (how Don Bosco’s life story can help us all and how we also
can follow in his footsteps).

REPORTER: Personally, I believe that your life story can help us all by
inspiring us to do great things, and we can follow in your footsteps by
always being kind to one another, and by being the best versions of
ourselves.
JOHN BOSCO: I agree wholeheartedly.

REPORTER: Thank you for giving us a little bit of an insight into who
you are.

JOHN BOSCO: My pleasure.

REPORTER: That was Don Bosco, the father and teacher of youth. Until
next time, I’m Jemma Craig and you’ve been watching ‘NEWS FOR ALL’
