Question 1: Answer the following questions based on fundamentals of power semiconductor devices. (6 Points)

a. Under what conditions an IGBT could possibly be selected over a SCR when designing a switching circuit.
Give reasons. (2 Points)
b. Describe and plot the reverse blocking and forward conduction modes of a SCR. (2+2 Points)

(CLO_2): (Cognitive Level C3 i.e. Applying) (PLO_1)

Question 2: Answer the following questions based on fundamentals of power semiconductor devices. (4 Points)

a. Considering an enhancement type n-channel MOSFET, draw and annotate the dynamic V-I characteristic
curve to determine the associated power-loss expressions. (2 Points)

b. An n-channel power MOSFET switches a 10A, 100V DC highly inductive load at f=10kHz. If the switch-
on time ton=1µs, switch–off time toff=2µs, on-state resistance is 0.2Ω at 10A. Determine the total power
loss across it. (1+1 Points)

Question 3: A DC-DC converter is shown in figure (a) with the given parameters: Vin=100V, L=100μH, R=100Ω
and Vo=500V. The ideal switch S is switched on and off with a switching frequency f=10kHz and the switching
time period is T=ton+toff =100μs. The circuit is operated in steady state with the inductor current iL also shown in
figure (b). (10 Marks)

value when D=0.6. (3+1 Points)

(CLO_4): (Cognitive Level C5 i.e. Synthesis) (PLO_3)

Question 4: A non-isolated DC/DC converter generates an output voltage of 150V with source voltage constant at
50V. The value of the inductor L is 5mH and the ideal switch is operated with a switching frequency of 5kHz with
the duty ratio of 0.4. (10 Points)

a. Propose a topology for this DC/DC conversion circuit and assess the circuit to derive the expression for the
output voltage. (1+2 Points)

𝑣𝐿(𝑡)). Also mention the x-axis and the ripple current values on to the plotted waveform. (1+1+2 Points)

c. Once the circuit has attained steady state and assuming the diode to be ideal, draw the waveform of the
diode current during ton and toff and estimate the power transferred at the output. (1+1+1 Points)
