RESPECT ELDERS AND LOVE YOUNGERS

The title of article that we have choose is Teach Young Adults Respect. The

author for the article is Lihanna Borhan. The article has been published in The New

Straits Times newspaper on Sept, 14th 2020. The author basically discussed about

the how to be respect to elders especially for teenagers in the community such as

the responsible people including parents and educational institution need to teach

young generation to be respect at any places which is public area. A lot of videos

have been posted in the media social by teenagers and adults which are the video

about the Malaysian woman who screamed and swore to the security guard and the

video about the man who are committing suicide on live stream in which that is not

good for children to watch the videos. Because of that, these viral videos show a

negative perceptive in the community as it is the effect of not being respect to elders.

We agree that the community who are parents and educational institution should

teach young people to respect elders.

Firstly, we agree that the community who are parents and educational

institution should teach young adults to respect elders because respect ourselves

and others in our life is essential to make a happy and harmony country as there

have been cases about the disrespect young adult. According from another source

of information, because of not respect to the elders it made the elders feel sad and

negative perceptions. From The News Mail in 2018, a young adult was smoking at

the public area and elderly man was politely informed him that he was not should to

smoke at that area. Suddenly, the gentlemen asked to the elders to go outside and

he said deaf ears to that elders. The community and public must be aware of the

disrespectful young people at the public in the country to take a quick action to make

them change their bad attitudes. Based on this example, the parents should take

their responsible as they need to teach their children about the positive moral values

to avoid being a disrespectful person.

Secondly, we agree that the community who are parents and educational

institution should teach young adult to respect elders because nowadays young

adults lack respect to elders. According from another source of information, this can

happen when young adults are mimicking the disrespectful and disobedient attitude,

which their friends exhibit at college, school or any institutional places. From the

New Straits Times in 2021, a 16-year-old girl publicly berates her mother for telling

her to be polite to an immigration officer when her application for an international

passport was incomplete. Other disrespectful behaviour in the news is when a

young woman not apologising after colliding with an elderly man in a supermarket.

In educational institution, educators play an important role to practice what they

preach to young adults. Based on this example, it is actually show that educational

institutions are also important to build good behaviour and personalities of young

adults because young adults spend a lot of time in learning and in their college other

than at home.

However, we disagree that the community who are parents and educational

institution should not fully to teach young adults to respect elders. In this issue, the

young generations exactly not know all the how to be respect to elders especially to

their parents. This is because, in the Al-Quran and the Sunnah have underlined in

many principles and precepts in which respect for the inherent dignity and human

beings in creating family obligations. Because of that, the young generations must

respect and kindness to parents as it is religious duty and an obligation of a child in

the family as they learn since born how to respect their parents and the community.

Parents should not be blame if their children being disrespectful with other people.

Moreover, if the young generations be disrespectful to older, they can be more prone

to get illnesses and injuries. According to The Star Newspaper, April 28 th 2015, in

Malaysia, the number of people reaching old is increasing from year to year so that

young teenagers should not adopt the western perceptive but they should be treats

with dignity and respect.

In conclusion, we firmly stand that the young adults should be taught about

the respect. If the young adults have this negative behaviour, it can cause problems

for themselves as well. Being a respectful person describes how they really are.

Besides, respect is more important than behaviour without feelings. Our personal

thoughts towards this issue is, parents should be a good example and play a role for

their children. This is because, education starts from home where the young adults

will see, learn and emulate their parents. Parents who show bad behaviour such as

disrespecting someone easily influence the young adults and the young adults tend

to follow it.

Other than that, the educators also may help to create a good behaviour of

the young adults. They can apply respect as well as pure values in learning

sessions. If educators set a good example, they can produce students of noble

character. With that, young adults can know how really important the respect is

about. Lastly, we stand that the young adults should be taught about the respect

behaviour in their life. It is very good if they are learning since they were a kid.

Having a respect person is not only giving a good environment for themselves but it

actually a good for others. “Respect requires empathy, the capacity to anticipate and

understand the feelings of others. It requires consideration.” -Deborah Norville.
