3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

 This basic and general education subject presents grammatical structures to produce a
simple paragraph based on a writing program. Additionally, it allows the
identification of a specific argument in oral and written communication. It also
considers learners’ personal opinions about different topics related to social, academic
and professional aspects.
 It includes the necessary vocabulary to make comparisons between present and past,
books or movies description, creation of simple students’ profile, opinions about
inventions, formal apologies and tell past events.

4. SUBJECT METHODOLOGY

The Communicative Approach: the course will be taught predominantly in English and
incorporate regular practice of the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Activities will serve to simulate as much as possible real-life communicative encounters.

Flipped Classroom: students will receive pre-assignments in preparation for classwork,


enabling teachers to focus more on the Practice and Production components, and less on
the Presentation component, of the PPP technique during the class time.

Collaborative and Cooperative Learning: students will be asked to work in groups with
and/or without the direct support of the teacher in and/or outside the classroom.

The assessment instruments used for the assessment of contact with the teacher (EHD) and the
assessment of autonomous learning (EHTA) may not each exceed 50% of the final grade out of 100
points in each term. The grade entered in the system is over 100, and the system automatically weights
it over 70 points.

Evaluation of practical-experimental learning (EHP).
This grade is entered at the end of the second term but is evaluated throughout the semester. The grade
to be entered is over 100, and the system weights it at 30 points.
The grade for the third assessment may include other assessment activities, except those included in
the assessment component of the practical hours.

FLIPPED ACTIVITIES & HOMEWORK


 Pre-Task: These assignments will be asked to be performed before class starts.
 Weekly Task: These assignments will be asked to be performed during the week.
 Post task: These activities will be performed after class.

VERB QUIZZES
· Each week a verb quiz will be taken. A total of 5 verb quizzes will be taken on each
partial.
· Students must study the list of the irregular verbs provided on page 176 from the
textbook.

CAMBRIDGE UNIT PROGRESS TEST


· At the end of each unit, a test will be taken in the virtual platform.
· The test will evaluate listening, reading and use of English content learned on each
unit.

CAMBRIDGE ONLINE WORKBOOK
· Unit 7, 8, 9 will be performed during the first partial.
· Unit 12, 11, 10 will be performed during the second partial.

EXAMS
· The First Exam which will comprise the first three units of the textbook (units 7, 8
and 9) and it will be taken on Week 6 and 7 as seen in the schedule of activities.
· The Second Exam will include the last three units of the textbook (units 10, 11 and
12) and it will be taken on Week 14 and 15 as seen in the schedule of activities.
· The Third exam (mejoramiento) will include all six units learned in the semester (unit
7 to unit 12).
 For the writing, reading, listening, and Use of English exams, students must be
required to have 2 devices (PC, laptop, cell phone or tablet)
a) Device 1: Used to take the exam in Aula Virtual
b) Device 2: Used to join the ZOOM session and must have a camera.
 The device with the camera must be placed at one side of the student, so the teacher
could be able to clearly see the student´s environment and the other device´s screen.
Please follow the examples provided in the pictures below.

 For the Speaking exam, each student must have two devices or a device with camera
and a mirror behind them.

A) Writing exam

Midterm Exam total time: 20 minutes

Choose and complete the text with the correct answer.


Rewrite the sentence with the correct capitalization and punctuation.

Final Exam total time: 45 minutes

Write a 100-120 word paragraph about the topic given by the teacher. Pay attention to
paragraph structure, capitalization, punctuation and use of English.

B) Speaking Exam

Midterm: Conversation. 10 points. 2-3 minutes each student.


Students work in pairs or in groups of three students at the most. For this assessment
they should develop a conversation basing on a situation presented by the teacher.

Final: Presentation. 10 points. 2-3 minutes each student.


Students will prepare and give a presentation about a topic related to a unit learned
and chosen by the teacher. There shall be no repeated topics.

C) Reading, Use of English and Listening Exam

Exam Total Time: 45 minutes

o READING: Read the text and choose the best option to complete the sentence
or to answer the question. 5 questions, 2 points each question.

o GRAMMAR: Read the following sentences or questions and choose the


option that best completes them.10 questions, 0.5 points each question.

o VOCABULARY: Read the following sentences and fill in the blanks. The
first letter is given. Complete the word. Do not use capital letters.10 questions,
0.5 points each question.

o LISTENING: You will hear 5 conversations. Answer the question that follows
each question. You may listen to each audio twice. Please watch how much
time you have left. 5 questions, 2 points each question.

PRACTICAL COMPONENT DESCRIPTION

WRITING

Midterm: Pre-Writing Content . 10 points.

Final term: Write a Paragraph. 10 points.


 A 100-120 word paragraph will be written at the end of second term.
 The students should develop the following graded products:
a) An outline which will contain a complete introduction, the ideas of the
supporting details and the conclusion.
b) Once the outline is finished, students should develop their first draft which
shall contain a topic sentence, three supporting sentences at least and a
complete conclusion.
c) The final product shall be the finished paragraph which should include all the
corrections pointed out by the teacher and will contain the same structure as
the first draft.

SPEAKING

Midterm: Conversation. 10 points. 2-3 minutes each student.


Students work in pairs or in groups of three students at the most. For this assessment
they should develop a conversation basing on a situation presented by the teacher.

Final: Video Presentation. 10 points. 2-3 minutes each student.


Students will record a presentation about a topic related to a unit learned and chosen
by the teacher. There shall be no repeated topics.

LISTENING

Midterm and final: Students will listen short and long audio texts to develop listening for gist
and details. There will be at least 2 activities for each term.

READING

Midterm and final: Students will read short texts to develop reading for gist and details. There
will be at least 2 activities for each term.

CLASSWORK (USE OF ENGLISH)

Midterm and final: students will perform grammar and vocabulary activities.

7. SUBJECT POLICIES

· All synchronous classes will be recorded and uploaded within 24 hours after the
classes are held.
· Show up regularly and on time to classes.
· Show an attitude of respect towards classmates and the teacher.
· Turn off the microphone when entering class.
· Be a protagonist, fulfilling a dynamic, participatory, and critical role within the
classroom.
· Take care of the correct application of the grammatical, syntactic, lexical regulations,
etc., both in oral and written productions. Also, take care of your work's presentation.
· Respect the intellectual authorship and cite the respective sources in all your works.
Plagiarism will be sanctioned.
· Be punctual handing in work, taking recess time, giving presentations, and taking
exams.
· Comply with assigned responsibilities even when you are absent from class. Use the
formal channels of communication with the teacher (ESPOL e-mail and AULA
VIRTUAL platform) for this purpose, in the same way with your classmates.
· Use advanced information technologies rationally, without neglecting the selection of
the quality of the information presented.
· Students must consider that group work is not equal to "the sum of the parts" but the
logical articulation of a topic's development. Consequently, their direct participation
demands a high level of research, critical reading, and creativity. It is about learning
with others, strengthening intellectual skills and interpersonal relationships.
· The group coordinators exercise leadership that guarantees the achievement of the
objectives of the work.
· The teacher or classmates can ask any student about the topic assigned for group
research, so "just clean up," "just prepare the materials," or "just carry out logistical
tasks" are not significant roles. All roles must be academic.
· If a student is registered as a member of a group and did not participate in preparing
the work, the group must record the student's non-participation. Otherwise, the entire

group will be sanctioned for violating this conduct to the ethical profile of the
professional in training.
· All questions, comments, or explanations are always welcome. That is why student
participation in class is expected. Class participation is used by the teacher to measure
the effort and interest of the student in the course.
· Academic integrity: Under no circumstances will the teacher tolerate any academic
dishonesty, including cheating on tests and/or assignments and plagiarism. All the
information used in work taken from sources written by authors, other than the
student, will have to be duly cited. In the case of detecting the breach of this rule, the
student will be automatically failed, with no option of complaint or appeal.
· Your teacher has a policy of total openness to the student, so any question, doubt, or
requirement will be pleasantly answered by e-mail or telephone.
· All the material will be uploaded in Virtual Classroom / Canvas for your access.
· If you had problems with the internet during a session, contact the teacher to recover
the grade for the activity evaluated in class.
