What is It
Lesson
Introduction
Measuring instruments are designed to give the most precise version of the
various dimensions for which they are used to determine. They can,
therefore, be considered as one of the most important set of tools in any
field. Due to their clear importance, it is essential that they remain in good
condition all the time. Any discrepancy in measurement can result to
disaster. Also, the measuring instruments are basically useless if it cannot
give reliable and accurate results.
1. Increase accuracy:
2. Extend life:
3. Lower costs:
1. Storage
5
right material, size, and shape and that it has the right features. Often,
these containers will have padding. For some types of gages, it is
recommended to place them on a clean, dry cloth inside a case. Keeping
tools in a case helps protect them from airborne contaminants and
accidental physical damage.
Over time, vibration can cause measuring tools to fall out of calibration, so it
is important to store instruments away from any equipment that may cause
vibration or movement.
2. Cleaning
The composition or the material of the device plays a significant role in the
cleaning method to be used. If an instrument is mostly aluminum, for
example, it is recommended to avoid using alcohol, as it can cause
aluminum to deteriorate. For brass, it is best not to use anything except for
a clean cloth that you have dampened with distilled water.
6
Some general cleaning tips include:
• Not leaving your instruments in contact with dirt or oil for long periods,
as oils can cause corrosion.
• Avoiding touching gages with your bare hands, as skin oils can be
damaging.
• Using a soft, non-abrasive cloth to clean your instruments and ensuring
the cloth is clean before using it.
Cleaning after every use is one of the most basic maintenance practices that
a lot of professionals do not engage in. As simple as it might sound, this is
one tip that would guarantee an extended lifeline for the measuring
instruments. Apart from just cleaning the surface, the areas that are harder
to reach should be cleaned as well. These areas could accumulate dirt a lot
more and can get into the precision instrument. Similarly, dust present on
the surface can prevent from getting accurate values during measurement.
Scheduled Cleaning
2. The task for which you use it: The job in which the tool is used
can also impact how often it requires cleaning. For example, pressure
gage maintenance may involve cleaning more often when used with
liquids, as opposed to solid items. Also, if the measurements are so
precise that small amounts of dirt or residue could throw them off,
there may be a need to clean the instruments more frequently.
Spot Cleaning
7
3. Handling
When using a measuring tool, it does not have the protection of its case or
storage space, so it is especially crucial to handle it carefully. Take care to
avoid sudden shocks or rough treatment such as dropping, throwing or
banging the device against hard surfaces. Placing rubber mats in
workspaces can help protect tools from damage should someone
accidentally drop them.
Avoid touching instruments that are especially sensitive with bare hands, as
the oils on skin can cause corrosion. For some tools, minimizing the time in
holding it or only touching it at certain points may be enough. For the most
sensitive instruments or those that need to handle more frequently, can be
used with lint-free gloves or accessories, such as tweezers, lifters and forks,
made specifically to handle sensitive instruments.
Another reason to avoid handling measuring tools for long periods is the
body heat. Holding an instrument for an extended period can cause it to
heat up, potentially throwing off the accuracy of the unit.

Maintenance and calibration record is the documented proof that the
equipment was maintained and calibrated and the corrective measure if
found to be out of calibration.
11
Below are some of the measuring instruments with its corresponding
maintenance and care.
Handle rules and tapes carefully and keep metal ones lightly oiled to prevent
rust. Never allow the edges of measuring devices to become nicked by
striking them with hard objects. It should preferably be kept in a wooden
box when not in use. It is recommended to pull it straight out from its
cases—do not bend them backward to avoid kinking tapes. With the windup
type, always retract the tape in clockwise direction—turning it backward will
kink or break the tape. With the spring-wind type, guide the tape by hand. If
it can snap back, it may be kinked, twisted, or otherwise damaged. It is not
recommended to use the hook as a stop. Slow down as when it reached to
full extension. Common tapes and rules usually are not graduated in units
smaller than sixteenths. Measuring in fractions smaller than sixteenths
requires precision measuring tool such as micrometer.
Micrometers
Calipers
Keep calipers clean and dry. Protect the points against damage. Store
calipers where they will not become bent or broken. Make sure they are
always stored in a case or box when not in use to protect from damage.
Never place a caliper on work that is revolving in a machine.
However, if you are not able to return a faulty measuring instrument to the
manufacturer, you should then contact a reputable repair company instead.
While doing this, you should make sure that they have enough reviews, and
can be vouched for and trusted. Also, you should never attempt to make
12
repairs for yourself. Especially if you do not have the technical knowledge or
even the required repair tools/spare parts. Similarly, if you detect any fault,
no matter how small or minor it is. You should immediately stop making use
of such an instrument to forestall further or any major damage.
