1. Introduction
1.1 Overview
This instruction manual provides the vessel designer, engineer and the crews with
the information required for the installation, operation and maintenance of ISS-N type
sewage treatment plant. This instruction manual should be fully understood by the
related persons to secure the safety of the workers and proper operation of the
equipment.
1.2 Warranty
IL SEUNG warrants the quality of the product in case when the crews performed
proper operation and maintenance according to the manual, within the warranty
period. If the warranty period has not been otherwise agreed, the warranty period
expires 18 month after the delivery of the equipment to the shipyard or 12 months
from the completion of commissioning, whichever comes first.
2. Safety Instruction
2.1 Safety in Operation Service
In order to keep the design capacity of the sewage treatment, the following must
be observed in proper manner.
Use the toilet paper which is well resolvable in water. Do not throw any foreign
substances into toilet bowl such as rubber products, cotton, cloth or vinyl.
Do not put fingers or foreign materials in the rotating parts of the aeration
blower or discharge pump.
Do not use cleaning chemical for toilet such as hydrochloric acid, insecticides,
deodorants etc. which may kill the microorganisms in the sewage treatment tank.
When it has been used, be sure to discharge it directly overboard.
After discharging, it must be cleaned with fresh water enough.
Recommend to use the same type of water for cleaning, dilution of sewage
treatment plant and toilet flushing used in normal operation of the vessel.
Sudden change or mixture of the flushing water (like as fresh water to seawater)
will have an adverse effect on the living condition of the microorganisms, since it
may cause to destroy the microbial eco-system in the sewage treatment plant
and in this case, re-incubation period for microorganisms may take longer than
normal.
Sodium hypochlorite solution is used in the sewage treatment system. Keep the
storage container of this chemical be sealed to prevent leaking of the harmful
gas for human.
Close the top cover of the tanks and each inspection cover during the operation,
to prevent the outflow of such harmful gas or stench.
Shut off the electrical power of the control panel prior to the maintenance work
of driving unit or each tank inside. During the maintenance period, put the
warning tags on the outside of panel, such as "Power Off for M
Do not have the welding work on the sewage treatment plant. The inside of the
sewage treatment plant is coated with phenol (#3, 4 tanks) and epoxy paint
(other tanks) to prevent from the corrosion. Welding heat will make damages to
the coating, which may be the cause of corrosion of the tanks.
3. Specification
3.1 Treatable Sewage
Based on the regulation of 73/78 MAPOL, the ISS-N STP is able to treat following
sewages.
Sewage from the Toilet
Sewage from the Shower Room, Laundry and Gallery
Sewage of which salinity level is less than max. 36,500 ppm
The following table shows the quality standard of treated sewage in accordance with
the regulation of IMO MEPC 227(64)
5. System Description
5.1 Summary
ISS-N sewage treatment plant applying the biological treatment process with Fixed
Biofilm Media which is suitable for a proper responding to load variation of ship
sewage is designed for the optimum utilization of the vessel space, enhancement of
the efficiency of the equipment and easy handling of the equipment by the operators.
Organic matter in the sewage flowed into biofilm reactor tank through the inlet screen
are decomposed by the microorganisms in the no.1, no. 2 reactor tanks and after
that, it flows through the sedimentation tank, activated carbon tank, sterilization tank
in order and finally discharged to the overboard.
5.2 Screen
Screen is installed to remove any contaminants (waste paper, vinyl and etc.) in the
toilet sewage of the vessel so to protect the machine from damage caused by
clogging in the treatment process. Periodic cleaning of this screen is required
through the inspection hole mounted on the no. 1 reactor tank cover.
At the bottom of the reactor tanks, diffusing pipe for the supply of oxygen is installed
for the microbial respiration. Air flown from the aeration blower through pipe forms
fine bubbles in the tank and it helps to increase the oxygen transfer rate in microbial
and to induce smooth circulation of the sewage inside of the tanks.
When the biofilm is once formed at the surface of fixed media in reactor tank, even
in the case of lack of sewage inflow from the vessel toilet, the microbial ecosystem
in the reactor tank can be balanced with the activated sludge returned from the
sedimentation tank. Such process makes reactor tanks respond easy to the load
variation of ship sewage.
Supernatant water flows into the sterilization tank for disinfection. A portion of
deposited sludge is returned to the no. 1 reactor tank by air lift pump and reused as
an activated sludge. Such sludge returning process helps the nutrient source, which
is necessary for the living of microorganisms, be maintained in the reactor tank and
it also increases the sedimentation efficiency in the sedimentation tank.
At the bottom of the activated carbon tank, diffusing pipe for the air supply is installed
for a smooth circulation of the water and activated carbon inside of the tank.
For a periodical back flushing of the activated carbon, steam or hot water supplying
pipe is also connected.
<Note>
The excessive sludge in the reactor tank and sedimentation tank, which is
naturally accumulated during the long time operation, should be removed
periodically (about every 30 days) through the overboard discharge line.
Be cautious that, as such excessive sludge is an untreated sewage, it must
be discharged only in the area allowed on the basis of provisions of "Sewage
Restricted Area" designated by the International Maritime Organization.
6. Installation
6.2 Piping
(1) Sewage inlet and air ventilation pipe should be installed with a proper slope
for a smooth flow of sewage or condensation water.
(2) Do not connect any other liquid pipes to the sewage inlet except the toilet,
water, grey water and hospital water pipe.
(3) Sewage pipes should be arranged to prevent clogging and appropriate clean
hole in the pipes should be arranged. Considering of stop or maintenance of
the plant, it is also strongly recommended to install on/off valves on the
sewage Inlet pipe.
(4) Overboard discharging outlet should be installed 200~300 mm below the
L.W.L.(Load Water Line).
(5) The discharge pipe line should be arranged with a check valve to prevent
seawater from flowing back to the unit. In preparation of the case when the
recommended to connect this pipe line to the sewage holding tank with a
valve.
(6) Cleaning water pipe should be connected and installed the check valve just
before the junction piping on fixed position of the unit.
(7) Pressure loss of ventilation piping shall be designed to be minimize.
Fig 2. P&ID
6.3 Wiring
(1) For the wiring, the marine and appropriate standards shall be applied.
(2) GLAND connection parts shall be completely sealed and waterproof.
(3) Specification of the power for sewage treatment system may be different
depending on the kind of ships. Check the voltage specification described
inside of the cover of control panel prior to connecting the power line.
(4) Check the grounding of the control panel and other electrical equipment such
as aeration blower, discharge pump and chemical pump. Check also the
grounding lines connected to each tank of the main body.
In the case when the sewage treatment plant (vacuum pump combined type) is
installed, the sewage inlet shall be connected to the dilution water inlet as shown
in Fig.2(A). In this case, the same type of water used in toilet flushing (seawater or
freshwater) is recommended to be used also for dilution water.
