OBJECTIVE: Determines the relations among the angles of a triangle

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Determining the Relations Among the Angles of a Triangle

In this lesson, you will be able to know that within the triangle itself, there exists
relationships between and among parts like the angles of a triangle, such that the
measure of one angle can be determined in terms of the other.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Recall that a triangle is a three-sided polygon.

The line segments AB, BC and AC are the sides of
the triangle. The points A, B and C are the vertices
and the angles A, B and C are the angles.

Activity 1:
̅̅̅̅ .
Consider triangle ABC. Draw a line through B parallel to 𝐴𝐶

➢ Is 𝑚∠4 + 𝑚∠2 + 𝑚∠5 = 180? Why?

➢ Is 𝑚∠1 + 𝑚∠2 + 𝑚∠3 = 180? Why?

Activity 2:
Consider triangle MIX. Extend ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑀𝑋 of ⊿𝑀𝐼𝑋 to make ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑀𝐷. Extend ̅̅̅
𝐼𝑋 of ⊿𝑀𝐼𝑋 to make ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐼𝐸.

➢ Is 𝑚∠1 + 𝑚∠4 = 180? Why?

➢ Is 𝑚∠1 + 𝑚∠2 + 𝑚∠3 = 180? Why?
➢ Is 𝑚∠4 = 𝑚∠2 + 𝑚∠3 = Why?

Since ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑋𝑀 and ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝑋𝐷 are opposite rays, then ∠1 and ∠4 form a linear pair. By the Linear Pair
Postulate, ∠1 a nd ∠4 are supplementary. Angle 4 is adjacent to and a supplement of angle 1.

In ⊿𝑀𝐼𝑋, angles 1 , 2 and 3 are the interior angles while 4 and 5 are exterior angles. Angle
4 is adjacent to and a supplement of angle 1. Angle 5 is also adjacent to and a supplement of
angle 1. We say that angles 2 and 3 are the remote inerior angles corresponding to the exterior
angles 4 and 5.

➢ An exterior angle of a triangle is an angle which is adjacent and supplementary to one of

the interior angles of the triangle.

➢ Remote interior angles of a triangle are the interior angles not adjacent to the given
exterior angle.

∠𝑂𝑃𝑀 is an exterior angle of △ 𝑃𝑀𝑁

∠𝑀 and ∠𝑁 are the remote interior angles
of exterior angle ∠𝑂𝑃𝑀

Exterior Angle Theorem

➢ An exterior angle of a triangle is larger than any of the remote interior angles of the
triangle.
∠𝑂𝑃𝑀 > ∠𝑀
∠𝑂𝑃𝑀 > ∠𝑁

➢ The measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the measures of
the two remote interior angles of the triangle.

𝑚∠𝑂𝑃𝑀 = 𝑚∠𝑀 + 𝑚∠𝑁

100 = 70 + 30
100 = 100

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE

1. In ⊿𝑋𝑌𝑍, ∠𝑋 is a right angle, while ∠𝑌 and ∠𝑍

are acute angles. What is 𝑚∠𝑌 + 𝑚∠𝑍?

Solution: Since ∠𝑋 is a right angle, its measure is 90°.

The sum of the measures of the angles of a triangle
is 180°, so 𝑚∠𝑋 + 𝑚∠𝑌 + 𝑚∠𝑍 = 180.
By substitution, we have
90 + 𝑚∠𝑌 + 𝑚∠𝑍 = 180
𝑚∠𝑌 + 𝑚∠𝑍 = 90

5. If ∠3 = 50° and ∠4 = 110°, find ∠1 _______

SUMMING UP

• The sum of the measures of the angles of a triangle is 180°.

• An exterior angle of a triangle is an angle which is adjacent and
supplementary to one of the angles of a triangle.
• For any triangle, the measure of an exterior angle is equal to the
sum of the measures of its two remote interior angles.
• Remote interior angles are angles which are not adjacent to the
exterior angle.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 3:

Solve these problems.

If ∠𝐴 measures 30°, find the value of x.
2. In △ 𝑅𝑆𝑇, if 𝑚∠𝑆 = 90° and 𝑚∠𝑇 = 30°, find the measure of an exterior angle at R.
3. In △ 𝐴𝐵𝐶, 𝑚∠𝐵 is four times as large as 𝑚∠𝐴. An exterior angle at C measures 125°. What is
the measure of ∠𝐴?
4. In △ 𝐷𝐸𝐹, the measure of an exterior angle at F is represented by 5𝑥. The measure of
∠𝐷 = 2𝑥 + 4 and the measure of ∠𝐸 = 6𝑥 − 58°. Find the value of 𝑥.
