1.1 Scope and field of application

The purpose of the present document is to define the criteria to

o follow
w in the preparation
of The Process Flow Diagram (PFD).
The field of application is that concerning primary oill and chemical systems and

A
secondary systems.
None of the auxiliary services’ balances, for the entire
ntire complex, are included in ththe
category of PFDs considered in this design criteria
a document.

2. DEFINITION

The process flow diagram (PFD) is a document that is prepared ed at the process
red
engineering level in the basic engineering development phase.
It is a simplified diagram that indicates the functional connections
ections between the main
items of plant equipment, as well as the location and function
ion of the main
ain control loops.
The plant’s material and heat balance accompanies the PFD.

3. GENERAL CRITERIA

3.1 Diagram content

The PFD is a document that contains just process information. In general,

eral, for each plant,
it shows the main equipment, the main process streams and d the auxiliary
ary services, with
their controls and the Material and Heat Balance reference
e number.

A
In particular, the PFD must contain all process equipment, pment, excluding motors, with the
associated ID code and a description of the service e provided at the side. For each iteitem
of equipment, the main internals that distinguish h it must also be indicated, such as a the
following, for example: demisters, catalytic beds,
eds
ds,, stack plates, filler sections, separa
separators,
heating coils, fractioning, absorption and stripping
ripping
ipping trays, etc.
The PFD must highlight the main processcess streams that enter and leave the equipment,

The PFD must also indicate the num

with reference to the Material and He

The streams to consider for the Material and Heat Balance are all of the process
streams identified on the PFD in question.
Even if the
they do not represe

still be considered

A table shall be included in the top right-hand corner of the process flow diagram (see
Annex 1) that lists the streams in input/output from the plant and indicates the following:
x molar flow for each component
x total molar flow
