2. DEFINITION
The process flow diagram (PFD) is a document that is prepared ed at the process
red
engineering level in the basic engineering development phase.
It is a simplified diagram that indicates the functional connections
ections between the main
items of plant equipment, as well as the location and function
ion of the main
ain control loops.
The plant’s material and heat balance accompanies the PFD.

A
In particular, the PFD must contain all process equipment, pment, excluding motors, with the
associated ID code and a description of the service e provided at the side. For each iteitem
of equipment, the main internals that distinguish h it must also be indicated, such as a the
following, for example: demisters, catalytic beds,
eds
ds,, stack plates, filler sections, separa
separators,
heating coils, fractioning, absorption and stripping
ripping
ipping trays, etc.
The PFD must highlight the main processcess streams that enter and leave the equipment,

the type of fluid in the streams must be clearly P for both the above
chemicals and d the auxiliary services.
In order to favor immediate investigation of processrocess pproblems, the significant flow
ting loops must be specified with an indication

FC foror the flow rate, TC for temperature, PC for pre
pres

different
erent running conditions).

The PFD must be drawn using lines of two different thicknesses: sses: the thicker

used for representing the main process lines (e.g. charging, arging, products, etc.) and the

Instrumentation lines must be drawn with a thin n dashed line, without distinction forfo the
type of signal required (pneumatic, electric, hydraulic,
ydraulic,

Crossings between two process lines are shown hown by interrupting

For each piece of equipment, e excluding the machines, the ID code and the service
description must be positione

Instead, the ID code and description for machines should be shown close to the lower
border of the drawing and should be positioned, as far as possible, vertically below the

The process
rocess and
a utility lines must have arrows to indicate the direction of flow. If it
necessary
essary to define the control system, such as in the case of cascading controls,
arrows
rrows sh
should also be used on the instrumentation activation lines.
Proce
Process lines that, although present on the diagram, are not involved in the normal
pro
processing cycle must be highlighted by adding the wording NNF above the lines in
question.
The streams in input to and output from the battery limits must be identified, indicating
the type of process fluid, followed by its origin and destination, and this wording must be
positioned above the line involved.
