What I Need to Know

Good day, learners! Are you doing well? This module was written for you as you go
through the several stages of research. This will help you further understand the must concepts in
practical research. To understand the data; that is, to find meanings in them in relation to your
study, you must conduct an orderly manner of gathering, identifying, and grouping them. A set-
by-set arrangement of facts and information is a must in research, because arriving at a conclusion
about your study based on the collected data, you don’t only deal with lone proof or evident but
also with several proofs hinging upon a common theme, concept, or theory.
Basically, this module has one lesson.
Lesson 1: Quantitative Research Designs
Therefore, at the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. Choose an appropriate quantitative research design;
2. Describe sampling procedure and samples;
3. Construct an instrument and establish its validity and reliability

What Is It
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH DESIGNS
In quantitative research, where you do a great deal of abstraction and scientific or logical thinking, a
research design is part and parcel of your study. By means of your research design, you are able to make
your methods or techniques in finding answers to your research questions and in collecting data clear.

Types of Quantitative Research Designs Experimental Research Design

This is a quantitative research design that bases its research method on a scientific activity called
experiment. This design involves two groups of subjects: the experimental group on which the
condition, treatment, or intervention is applied and the control group that is not given any treatment or
condition.
There are two types of experimental research designs;
a. True-Experimental Design
A bias free selection that ensures objectivity of results.
b. Quasi-Experimental Design

The non-adherence of this research design to random selection of participants is the reason why it got the
name. This is a research with the capacity to yield findings that are seemingly or more or less true.

Type of Quasi-Experimental Design Definition

Matched comparison group design You get a set of participants that show close
similarities with the experimental or treatment
group based on one or more important
variables.
Time-series The act of controlling the variables in this case
is through multiple observations of the subjects
before and after the treatment is applied to the
experimental group. This is to see the
connection between the pre-test and post-test
based on the treatments applied.
Counter-balanced Control is applied to one group to examine the
effects of all treatment and conditions to
control variables.
Single-subject This is used when the population is so large
that you find difficulty in choosing a group to
2 study.
Non-Experimental Research Designs
This is a quantitative research design that is capable of giving qualitative and quantitative data,
but more on qualitative data. This involves variables the way they naturally exist on earth.
There are 5 types of non-experimental research designs.
1. Descriptive
Depicts an image or a picture of an individual or a group.
2. Comparative
States the differences or similarities between or among people, things, or objects.
3. Correlative
Shows the extent and direction of variable relationships between the subjects.
4. Survey
Describes the behavioral patterns of a big number of people for arriving at a certain conclusion
about social concerns and issues.
5. Ex Post Facto
The purpose of deriving data from things that are by nature taking place, so as to obtain explanations about past
events.
