HEAT TRANSFER
(MECHANICAL ENGINEERING)

Duration: 3 hours Max Marks: 70

Answer any FIVE questions. All questions carry equal marks

1. Derive the expression for general conduction equation in

Spherical coordinate system. 14 M

2. What is critical thickness of insulator on a small diameter

wire, explain its physical significance and derive an
expression for the same for pipe and sphere. 14 M

3.
a) Define lumped heat analysis. 4M

b) A stainless steel rod of outer diameter 1cm originally at a

temperature of 3200C is suddenly immersed in a liquid at
1200C for which the convective heat transfer coefficient is
100W/m2K. Determine the time required for the rod to
reach a temperature of 2000C. 10 M

4.
a) Illustrate the significance of Reynolds number and Nusselts
number. 4M

b) Water at 500C enters a 1.5cm diameter and 3m long tube
with a velocity of 1m/s. The tube wall is maintained at a
constant temperature of 900C. Calculate the heat transfer
coefficient and the total amount of heat transferred if the
exit water temperature is 640C. 10 M

5.
a) A vertical plate 0.25 m high is maintained at a temperature
of 700C in a still atmosphere of air at 250C. Compute the
boundary layer thickness at the trailing edge of the plate.
What would be this boundary layer thickness, if this plate
were placed in air stream flowing at a velocity of 5m/s over
the plate? 10 M

b) Why Reynolds number appears only in forced convection.

6.
a) Explain the conditions under which drop wise condensation
can take place. Why does the rate of heat transfer in
drop-wise condensation many times larger than in film-
wise condensation? 4M

b) Dry saturate steam at a pressure of 2.45bar condenses on

surface of a vertical tube of height 1m. The tube surface
temperature is kept at 1170C. Estimate the thickness of the
condensate film and local heat transfer coefficient at a
distance of 0.2m from the upper end of the tube.

7.
a) Explain, how are the heat exchangers classified? 4M

b) Calculate the overall coefficient of heat transfer between

water and oil, if the water flows through a copper tube of
180mm inside diameter and 15mm thick while the oil flows
through the annulus formed by this pipe and an outer
concentric pipe. The thermal conductivity of the tube wall
is 349 W/m K and the fouling factors on the oil and water
side are 0.00086 m2K /W and 0.000344 m2K / W
respectively. The oil and water side heat transfer
coefficients can be taken as 1280 and 4650 W/m2K
respectively. 10 M

convex and flat surfaces? 7M

b) Show that for two infinite parallel gray planes exchanging

radiant energy, the mean emissivity is given by 7M
.
