ATTACHMENT.
Abstract
I attended my industrial attachment at Yumbuni
Secondary School as part of my degree
programs achievement. This was very
important towards exposing my personality and
training me while preparing me to the work
expected in the outside world after my
university degree.
This attachment report is aiming at giving my
feedback to my school, Murang'a University Of
Technology. The attachment report aims at
giving the importance of industrial attachment
to the life of students according to my personal
view, the experience, the skills obtained at the
site of attachment, as well as the strengths and
weaknesses of the site of attachment.
The report will also acknowledge some special
people who made my attachment session
awesome and submission of this report
successful.

Introduction

Before attending an industrial attachment, I

never knew how important it was to the life of
any serous student until I faced it as a Murang'a
University of Technology requirement. I used to
take it as a waste of time and money until when
I realized that, it is an eye opener to the outside
world. The challenge students are given by the
university to co and search for an attachment
places for themselves has a positive impact
towards improving ones confidence and
creating network with others outside the
school.
I was among those who were successful in
securing a place of attachment without any
help from family and without knowing anyone
at Yumbuni Secondary school.

When going to my place of attachment, I had

three things in my mind; to practically learn
about laboratory operations, improve my
analytical chemistry skills, and meet new
friends.

Yumbini Secondary school is a public school

located in Machakos county, Yatta
constituency, Kyua Location along Machakos –
Kitui road.
The school has is a mixed day/boarding with
mixed boys and girls. It’s sponsored by the
central government/DEB.
During my attachment the school had 14
teachers eight male and five female. The school
principal was Mrs. Nzau while the deputy was
Mr. Gitonga.
The department of sciences was managed by
Mrs. Ndengwa. The manager, Mrs Ndegwa was
very amazing teacher. She was offering me
extra support including advisory ones. The
supervisor and other staff members were also
good and were giving me any help whenever
necessary. The other normal workers also gave
me able time to learn not only the academic
part but also the social way of life.

The Core work of Yumbuni Secondary School.

The core business of Yumbuni Secondary

School is to produce good discipline, strong
spiritual foundation, academic excellent, and
team work for the students. The main activity
of the institution is to teach students the
subjects given by the ministry of education
which includes; mathematics, English, Kiswahili,
Chemistry, History, CRE, Physics, Biology,
Geography, and Computer. The other activities
offered in the institution are co-curriculum
activities like playing football, volleyball, and
table tennis.

Strategic plan.

The field attachment took me forty six intense

days. On arrival, my field supervisor Mr Gitonga
had a siting where we drew a plan on how I was
going to handle the days that I would spend in
the Institution. He also gave me an assistant
who would help me through every step of my
stay. From the plan, we agreed that I would
have to handle any thing relating to laboratory
from Chemistry, Biology to Physics.
The activities included;
a) Practical preparations
b) Practical presentations
c) Cleaning of the school laboratory
d) Taking of the laboratory stock
e) Guiding students on the practical session
a) Preparing practical questions
b) Helping them on how to tackle them
f) Helping chemistry teachers when
necessary.
g) Being ready to help the school when need
arises.
Practical preparation.

When the chemistry teacher decides to have a

practical lesson, he or she was to tell me the
type of the practical and the quantity needed
and was to make it ready before the lesson
time. I was to help the teacher to arrange the
reagents and all the requirements before the
class begins.

Cleaning of the laboratory

Laboratory contains very harmful chemicals

like Hydrochloric acid and nitric acid which are
very fatal when gets in touch with any body
parts and it’s not everyone allowed to enter in
the room. Cleaning of the laboratory tools and
equipment also need a serious person because
most of them are fragile like conical flasks, and
thermometers.
Yumbuni secondary school strengths.

1. The institution has more than 150

students.
2. It is located close to tarmac road which
makes it very accessiful by the teachers
and the visitors .
3. The institution produces bright students
and where most of them join universities.
4. The institution has plenty of fresh water
from a borehole thus health for the
students and the workers.
5. The institution has a school bus which can
carry students, teachers and other
workers when attending special occasions
from the school.
6. The institution is supplied with electricity
making it very easy for the students to
study well during night and morning
preps.
Weaknesses.
1. The weather within the institution Is
very hot during the summer which is
not good for the students.
2. The TSC teachers are very few and this
makes the school to have defficiency
of good and qualified teachers from
the government.
3. There is a very few science teachers
making it very hard for the students to
pass science subjects.

Summery of skills gained from yumbuni

secondary school.
1. Effective communication – from
interacting with the school stuff to
presenting practical to the students, I
was able to develop my English
communication language.
2.Teaching skills – not only did I go the
Yumbuni to do practical, I was given an
opportunity to teach some classes when
the chemistry teacher is not around.
Others included teaching of morning
preps since some of the teachers where
staying away from the school.
3.Stock taking skills. From taking of the
laboratory stock to and the whole
school, I was able to learn good stock
taking methods.
4.Handling of laboratory chemicals and
equipment – since many laboratory
chemicals are very harmful, I knew how
to wear PPEs the right way. I also
learned how to handle the fragile
laboratory equipment like
thermometers and test tubes.
5.Preparing laboratory practical my main
a gender in YSS was to prepare practical
for the students and this helped me to
learn different methods of mixing
reagents during practical preparation.
6.Team work- to get the best, I was to
involve other science teachers in
helping me when in need. I also helped
other teachers like when making of the
school examinations.

Recommendations.
1. YSS should make sure they face the
school compound to minimize the sneaking
of the students out of the school during the
night.
2. The number of watchmen needs to be
increased to ensure no sneaking of students
at night.
3. Boy -girl relationships in the school
needs to be dealt with as this may read to
early pregnancies, school dropouts, and
poor performance by the students.
4. TSC teachers needs to be increased thus
ensuring the students get experienced
teachers as opposed to BOM teachers who
have no enough teaching experience.

Conclusion.
In conclusion, my attendance in Yumbuni
Secondary School exposed me to a lot of skills
in the laboratory field and I believe I can
effectively do laboratory work if given any. The
skills I learned does not only apply to school
laboratory but any laboratory of it’s kind.
Learning how to prepare practical, present
them to the students and attending teaching
classes was very amazing. I can call my stay at
yumbuni a success.
I remember when leaving yumbuni, every
student termed me as the best teacher than
the ones they have had before. They even
asked me to stay for some more time especially
those who are in form four now until they do
their KCSE.
