AT

GOVERNMENT DAY SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL,


ADETA, ILORIN, KWARA STATE.

DURATION:- Monday, 31st May 2021 - Friday, 18th June 2021


CLASSROOM OBSERVATION
Classroom observation is a formal or informal
observation of teaching while it is taking place in a
classroom or other learning environment. Classroom
observations are often used to provide teachers with
constructive critical feedback aimed at improving their
classroom management and instructional techniques.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL

Government Day Junior Secondary School, Adeta is
a state government school promulgated by Federal
Government of Nigeria, founded in October 1997,
commissioned by the Kwara State Universal Basic
Education Board with 9 staff including principal and vice
principal, 320 students and 6 classrooms(including
staffroom, principal and vice principal offices) from
inception. Presently, Government Day Senior Secondary
School, Adeta has 46 staff(38 teaching staff and 8 non-
teaching staff), 355 students(173 males and 182 females),
enough classrooms, staffrooms and offices, computer
room, equipped library and football field.
The school set to nurture and develop teaching and
learning activities with the motive to provide basic
knowledge for students to prepare them for future
endeavors. The school location is moderately conducive
for teaching and learning activities and its surrounding is
quite neat.
The school management is effective and efficient as
well as the teachers goes to class for lessons and the
students are obedient, responsible and well-cultured.
Government Day Senior Secondary School, Adeta
follows National Curriculum subjects:- these are English
language, Mathematics, Computer studies, Islamic
religion studies, Arabic, Social studies, Home economics,
Christian religion studies, Basic sciences, Civic
education, Creative art, Security education, Yoruba,
Introductory technology, Physical health education among
others.

INTRODUCTION
Primarily, I sincerely appreciate the entire staff
tireless efforts, in particular the principal, vice principal
Alh. Mr Gambari Simbiat for accommodating me, I
purposely chose Government Day Senior Secondary
School, Adeta for my observation activities and I spent
twelve working days in Government Day Senior
Secondary School, Adeta.

The First day(31st May 2021)


I got to Government Day Senior Secondary School,
adeta and met with my co-observers. The vice
principal(acad) asked us to wait at one of their staffrooms.
After some minutes, he called us in and gave us some
little orientation about the school and directed us to join
the staff on the assembly.
After the assembly, I was introduced to the social
studies teacher(Alh. Mr Gambari Simbiat). She showed
me the topics they have done so far and what is expected
of me to know. I went with my subject teacher into the
class and I observed the methodology and approach she
used to teach the students. I signed out when the bell was
rung at exactly 2:00pm for closing time.
The Second day(1st June 2021)
I was in school around 7:29am. I went with my
subject teacher into the class and I observed and
monitored the students while she teach. At 2:04pm, I left
the school.
The Third day(2nd Juna 2021)
I came in around 7:35am and the social studies
teacher gave me the opportunity to teach the
students(roles and responsibilities of family members as a
primary social group) as I teach she obsvered. The
students really enjoyed the class. I asked the students
series of questions in order to ascertain if the topic was
well comprehended.
However, every Wednesday (8:40am-10:00am) at
Government Day Senior Secondary School, Adeta was
scheduled for sanitation of the school surroundings, the
students do the cleaning and clearing while the entire staff
and school prefects monitor them. I also monitored some
sets of students clearing grasses with cutlass. And I left
the school at exactly 2:00pm.
The Fourth day (3rd June 2021)
It was on bright Tuesday and we started the usual
day activities. I followed the teacher to the class and I
observed the teacher and I was given the opportunity to
lay emphasis on what the students did not understand
about the topic. After the class I waited for 10 minutes
more to ensure all the students copy their notes and
elucidate what they did not comprehend which they
appreciate and I realized that teaching is a noble
profession. I left the school around 2:04pm after signing
out.

The Fifth day(4th June 2021)


As usual I came in around 7:35am and I went to SS1
class to teach them commerce due to absent of the subject
teacher and I taught them(partnership) and I was very
glad because the student responded well in the class and I
gave them homework which they did well.
Exactly 8:40am the bell was rung and all the
students came out for the weekly sanitation of the school
surroundings. The entire staff allocated works to the
students and monitored them vividly. I also joined the
school staff to ensure the allocated works were properly
done. The school management provide the students water
and antiseptic soap in order for the students to get their
body clean after the sanitation. I left the school at 2:01pm.
The Sixth day 7th june 2021
I went straight to my subject teacher since the school
usually have their assembly on Mondays and Fridays
only. I was given record book to record the student's full
name alphabetically order(for easy identification of the
student's name) in order to prepare ahead of the first C.A
test.
Also, I learnt how to set test questions and how to
invigilate. By fifth period, I followed the teacher to class
while she teach and I observed. I signed out at 2:00pm.
The Seventh day(8th june 2021)
I went to the school and I joined them on the
assembly. After the assembly, I went with the teacher into
the staffroom because we have class by second period. I
followed my subject teacher to SS1 class and I observed
the teaching techniques she used to teach the students. I
left the school at 2:06pm.
The Eighth day(9th june. 2021)
I was in school around 7:33am, my co-observer sent
for me to assist her in invigilating SS2 class test. My
subject teacher gave the privilege to set SS1 test question
and to provide answers to the questions
I followed the teacher into the class to invigilate the
students. After the test I was offered to mark the scripts
and record the test scores having being checked by the
teacher. I was a bit tired that day but it was a nice day. I
signed out at the vice Principal's office when the school
timekeeper rung the bell at 2:00pm for closing time.
The Ninth day(15th JUNE. 2021)
I went to the school and I associated with my subject
teacher. I was given some student's marked script to
record. After some minutes, I was asked to invigilate a
class which I did and I learnt how to evaluate. I left the
school at 2:01pm.
The Tenth day(16th JUNE. 2021)
I got to Government Day Junior Secondary School,
Adeta around 7:32am. I was sent for by the vice
principal(admin) of the school to maintain order in JS2
class which their subject teacher was absent due to a
cogent reason. After that I was given a class to invigilate
whereas the students are still in their test week.
Besides that, I marked the student's script and
recorded their scores in the record book after being
scrutinized by my subject teacher. I felt very great on that
day. I signed out at 2:04pm.
The Eleventh day(17th june. 2021)
It was a very bright Friday. I came in around 7:36am
and I joined the assembly. I was opportuned to maintain
orderliness on the assembly ground. After the assembly, I
went with the teacher to the class and I observed and
monitored the students while she teach. I left the school at
1:00pm.
CONCLUSION
Observation is an indefatigable way to ameliorate
students' teacher teaching skill. It groom students' teacher
to know-how practically the blueprint, strategies and
procedures involve in classroom management and
teaching activities.
Moreover, this exercise has affirmed that no precise
teaching method, but they are used as a matter of
appropriateness to teach meaningfully, effectively and
efficiently. Verdict, remedial and resolution are done by
the teachers to enhance intended learning outcomes of the
students.
Besides, my unfeigned appreciation goes to the
University of Ilorin, Faculty of education and our astute
lecturers who considered it fit to send us on the
observation exercise because it engaged many of us to the
teaching profession and we have widen our experience on
the teaching profession.
Furthermore, my profound appreciation goes to the
school management and the entire staff of Government
Day Secondary Secondary School, Adeta for permitting
us to observe their student's activities. May Almighty
Allah bless you all always.
