BACKGROUND:
The Poro MPA Management Council is created as the body responsible for the management, protection,
conservation, and development of the Poro Marine Protected Area. The management efforts such as the
strengthening of patrolling and enforcement operations, regular coastal clean-ups, and adequate
information and education campaigns (IEC) play a significant role in improving coral reefs and reducing
illegal fishing activities. To effectively implement MPA's conservation and protection laws, PMMC has 10
Bantay Dagat that regularly patrols within and around Poro MPA. The patrolling and enforcement team
comprises 11 members, including Mr. Simplicio Baldemor, the elected team leader. The following names
are the current members of the team (bantay dagat):

The ten bantay dagat are divided into 5 groups who alternately patrol the MPA so every day, there are two
bantay dagat delegated to perform their patrolling duties. The Poro Watchtower is located at Poro Point
baywalk and their duty starts at 8:00 AM and ends every 5:00 PM. The number of duties per bantay dagat
in a month is six which has a daily incentive of 500.00 To continue operation despite the community
quarantine, the team secured a permit and certificate from the BLGU of Poro, allowing it to continue.

which is considered illegal. So he talked

move away from the MPA. The violator
gave 4 freshly caught fish. Mr. Reysam
said that he received the fish as proof of
the incident.
-At 11:30 am we went to LMPA to
coordinate the incident since the alleged
violator is a residing in Brgy. Lingsat.

-At 9:37 am, we spotted ‘”karataw” in the
buffer zone of the Poro MPA. We
immediately responded with the help of
Mr. Jesus Medriano. The
violator/intruder was being enlightened
of his action.
-No violator or intruder was encountered
during the operation of patrolling.

Poro MPA watchtower.
