What’s New
Read information sheet no.1. Be ready to answer the following activity.

At work, it is important to distinguish, hazard risk, and exposure when

undertaking risk management. By Definition hazard is the potential for harm, or
adverse effect on an worker’s health. While Risk is likely having that a hazard will
cause injury or health to anyone at or near workplace. The level of risk increases
with the severity of the hazard and the duration and frequency of exposure.
Exposure occurs when a person comes into contact with the hazard.

What is It

Read and understand information sheet no. 2.

Types of Hazard
1. Physical – includes floors, stairs, work platforms, steps, ladders, fire, falling objects,
slipper surfaces, manual handling (lifting, pushing, pulling), excessively loud and
prolonged noise, vibration, heat and cold, radiation, poor lighting, ventilation, air
quality.
2. Mechanical and/or electrical – includes electricity, machinery, equipment, pressure
vessels, dangerous goods, fork cleft, cranes, hoist.

Identify types of hazard in working place.

What’s More
Read and understand information sheet no. 3.

Factors that influence the degree of risk include :

 how much a person is exposed to a hazardous thing or condition; and
 how the person is exposed (e.g., breathing in a vapor, skin contact), how
severe are the effects under the condition of exposure.

Risk assessment is the process where you;

 Identify hazards;
 Analyze or evaluate the risk associated with that hazard
 Determine appropriate ways to eliminate or control the hazard.

Activity #3: Identify the following words whether Hazard, Risks and
Safety measures or actions.
Ex. Lifting heavy objects incorrectly – Hazard
Back Injury – Risks

1. Manual Handling of tools – knives, secateurs, loppers, crowbars, weed, bags,

mattocks.
2. Repetitive strain
3. Teach and remind workers of correct lifting and carrying techniques.
4. Repetitive movements, bending and awkward working positions.
5. Back/Limb injury

Hazard Risks Safety measures or

actions
