Week 7 Day1
What is research?

The dictionary meaning of the word research says, that it is a systematic investigation into, and a study of materials and
sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

Australian universities, define research this way:

Research is the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to
generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous
research to the extent that it leads to new and creative outcomes.
https://www.westernsydney.edu.au/research/researchers/preparing_a_grant_application/dest_definition_of_research

Another meaning of research describes it as a systematic and organized process

searching for and gathering information usually to answer a particular question or problem whose goal is to verify or
generate theories.
It involves 3 steps namely:
1. Posing a question
2. Collecting data to answer the question and
3. Presenting the answer to the question

Do Task 6 at page 466-467 (1whole sheet)

How to select and limit a research topic

Task 2
Read Page 417-418 of your textbook. Then choose a topic for your research.
Aside from the topic suggested in the book about local treasure or heritage in the community, you can choose
from among relevant social issues of your interest. However, make sure that it is doable considering the situation under
the new normal. Submit 2 or 3 possible titles for the teacher to approve. If you have internet access, you can send them

Day 2

Writing a Bibliography
Task 3
Read Task 12 at page 448-452 and page 182-184- The American Psychological Association format.
Practice writing the correct bibliography format of the given information using the APA style at page 221-222 (3 items)

Example:
From the given information, write the correct bibliography entry in APA format.

Imagine you have written an essay. You have used information from a book. The Author is John Smith and he wrote it in
2003.The title of the book is English for Everybody. It was published in Bangkok by Lotus Press.

At page 183, where you can find the APA format for different types of materials, look for the format for books.
1
You will find, at the upper part, the guide to the correct order of the given bibliographical information.

The correct order is: First is the author’s last name, (comma) then the first name initial. (period) followed by the
publication date or year of publication. (enclosed with parentheses) (period) then the book title in italic or underlined.
(period) then add additional information if there is any. This is followed by City or place of publication: (colon) then the
Publishing company. (period).
Answer: Smith, J. (2003) English for Everybody. Bangkok: Lotus Press.

Task 4
Read "How to write a bibliography" at page 343-344. Do task 10 at page 345.

Task 5
Gather resources/support materials for your research.
 Collect as many support materials as possible from different sources within your reach like books, magazines,
encyclopedias and credible sources from the internet which are related to your topic and that could be used as
bases of your arguments.
 As you gather the materials, do not forget to include the sources. These are the information that you will need
in writing the Bibliography like the author, year of publication, title of the book, (if you are using a book) title of
the article, place of publication and publisher. And, if you are using the internet, add date retrieved and the
URL.
 Gather at least five (5) to ten (10) materials for every possible topic you have in mind. Note: It would be better
if you have already an approved title so that you will focus your effort on gathering materials on that topic only.
If you don't have an approved topic yet, you can send them now to your teacher through messenger or text.

Day 3
The Research Paper
Note: By this time, it is assumed that You have already finalized your topic/title.

Due to the current condition brought about by the pandemic, wherein your movements are restricted, we exclude some
parts of your research paper.

I. The introduction - leads the reader from a general subject area to a particular field of research. It establishes
background information about the topic, states the purpose of the paper in the form of the hypothesis,
question, or research problem. It explains its relevance. It tells how the writer plans to gather evidences
(method being used), to come up with a potential result (outcomes).

What are some important parts of an introduction?

 General idea
 background information of the topic. (Answers the question WHAT)
 The problem of the study or the research question.
 The Purpose of the study (Answers the question WHY)
 The Method that the researcher will apply to find answers or solution. (Answers the question HOW)
 The significance or importance of the study (answers What for)

Example:
Video games are now considered as one of the most played games in the country. Years ago, when these games
were not yet invented, who would have thought that these games were possible. But now, they are part of the everyday
lives of most young people. However, many are blaming these video games as one of the major causes of the poor
performance of the students in school. The purpose of this study is to find out if video games really cause the students
to fail in school, or is it the students who lack self- control and motivation to study?
To find the answer to this question, the researcher will gather information from the different sources in the
internet. It is important to know the truth behind students’ low performance at school so that this problem can be
addressed properly once and for all.

Now, let’s examine the paragraph. Does it contain the important parts of an introduction?

Can you find the general idea of the topic? How about the background information?

The first sentence states the general idea followed by the second sentence that states the background information of
the topic.

2
 Video games are now considered as one of the most played games in the country. Years ago, when these

students who lack self-control and motivation to study?

How does the researcher plan to find answers to the research question?

The Method that the researcher plans to apply to find the answer to the research question is in the first sentence of the
second paragraph.
 To find the answer to this question, the researcher will gather information from the different sources in the
internet.

What is the reason why this study is conducted?

The significance or importance of the study is mentioned in the last sentence. It is important to know the truth behind
students’ low performance at school so that this problem can be addressed properly once and for all.

Before you start the next activity, make sure you have already an approved title. (as required in Activity 2)

Task 6
Write the introduction of your research. (It must have some parts mentioned above, but not necessary all)
By the way, others write their introduction after the research because it is easier when they have already seen
the whole study and understand more the process that they are doing. But then, the choice is yours. It doesn’t matter
whether you write your introduction first or last. What matters is that wherever and whenever you do it, you do it with
your heart.

If you have internet connection, please send your introduction to your teacher when done.

Technical definition is a very detailed description of a term while an operational definition is the specific
meaning of a word or phrase given to it by the group of people who use the word in their specific context.

Example: The word gap

The Technical definition of the word gap is, a break or hole in an object or between two objects.
And here is how it is used in the sentence:
“A ray of sunshine shone through a gap in the clouds.”

III. Result and Discussion

Results
The results section of the research paper is where you report the findings of your study based upon the
information gathered as a result of the methodology [or methodologies] you applied. The results section should simply
state the findings, without bias or interpretation, and arranged in a logical sequence. The results section should always
be written in the past tense. A section describing results [a.k.a., "findings"] is particularly necessary if your paper
includes data generated from your own research.

Discussion
The purpose of the discussion is to interpret and describe the significance of your findings in light of what was
already known about the research problem being investigated, and to explain any new understanding or fresh insights
about the problem after you've taken the findings into consideration. The discussion will always connect to the
introduction by way of the research questions or hypotheses you posed and the literature you reviewed, but it does not
simply repeat or rearrange the introduction; the discussion should always explain how your study has moved the
reader's understanding of the research problem forward from where you left them at the end of the introduction.

Task 12
Based on the body of your research, Write the Result and Discussion
Right after writing, if you have internet connection, submit your work to your teacher.

IV. Conclusion
The conclusion is intended to help the reader understand why your research should matter to them after they
have finished reading the paper. A conclusion is not merely a summary of your points or a re-statement of your
research problem but a synthesis of key points. For most essays, one well-developed paragraph is sufficient for a
conclusion, although in some cases, a two-or-three paragraph conclusion may be required.

Task 13
Write your Conclusion
Right after writing, if you have internet connection, submit your work to your teacher.
