1. A cylinder contains oxygen at a pressure of 2.00 atm. The volume is 6.00 L, and the
temperature is 300 K. Assume that the oxygen may be treated as an ideal gas. The oxygen
is carried through the following processes:
• Heated at constant pressure from the initial state (state 1) to state 2, which has T
= 500 K.
• Cooled at constant volume with temperature of 200 K (state 3).
• Compressed at constant temperature to a volume of 6.00 L (state 4).
• Heated at constant volume to 300 K, which takes the system back to state 1.
(a) Show the series of the processes on the pV-diagram. (2 pts)
(b) Compute the values of p and V in each four states (4 pts).
(c) Calculate the W, Q, and ΔU for each of the four processes (4 pts).

2. Three moles of an ideal gas are taken around the cycle acb as shown in the Figure. For
29.1 𝐽
this gas, 𝐶𝑝 = 𝑚𝑜𝑙 ∙ 𝐾.Process ac is at constant pressure, process ba is at constant
volume, and process cb is adiabatic. The temperatures of the gas states a, c, and b are
𝑇𝑎 = 300 𝐾, 𝑇𝑐 = 492 𝐾 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑇𝑏 = 600 𝐾. Calculate the total work for the cycle.
