A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

August 22, 2018

I. Objectives

Given several examples and activities, the Grade 8 students are expected to
determine whether an equation represents a function or not with 80% proficiency.

II. Content and Materials

A. Topic: Equation that Represents a Function

D. Method of Teaching: Discovery Method

III. Procedure

1. Preliminary Activities

a. Greetings
b. Prayer
c. Checking of Attendance
2. Developmental Activities

A. Activity

a. Review

The teacher will be asking the students the following

questions:
1. What did we discuss last Monday?
2. How can you determine whether an equation represents
a function?
3. Is the y the dependent variable? Why or Why not?
4. When do we say that y is a function of x?
5. What are the instances or examples of an equation
where it does not represent a function?

B. Exploration and Discovery

The teacher will give more examples of equation and

determine if it represents a function.
Here are the examples:
1. y=3 x 2 +4
2. y 2=6 x +3
3. y =10
4. y = √ x+ 1
5. y=| x|

C. Generalization

The teacher will ask the following questions for generalization:

1. When do we say that an equation represents a function?
2. What does it mean when there is more than one value of
y determined when x is equal to something? Give an
equation which does not represent a function.
D. Application

The teacher will divide the class into four for a group activity. Each
group is tasked to answer only one question from the following and to
present their work to the class:
1. Does y=x 2 +7 x +3 define y to be a function of x
x 2+ 1
2. Does y= define y to be a function of x?
x
3. Does y=| x|−4 define y to be a function of x?
4. Does y 2=2 x 2+1 define y to be a function of x?

IV. Evaluation

Directions: On a one whole sheet of paper, determine whether the equation determines
y to be a function of x. Write F if it determines a function and N otherwise. Show your
solutions.
1. y=7 x 2 +5
2. y2 = 3 - 2 x
3. y = 11
4. y=| x2|+ x
5. y= √ x +1

V. Assignment
Do a research on how to find the domain of a function given its equation. Use any
website or any Intermediate Algebra book as a reference.
