10. Objective(s) of Course :


Upon completion of the course, students are expected to

i. Explain the basic legal principles governing the hospitality and travel
industry

ii. List and explain the various laws governing the hospitality and travel
industry

iii. Explain the legal environment in which hotels, restaurant, travel agencies
and travel-related businesses must exist

iv. Describe the guest relationship

v. Develop the understanding towards preventive legal management

11. Course Learning Outcomes:


Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

i. Gain a management’s perspective of current laws and regulations that


affect the hospitality and travel industry (C3, P3, A1).

ii. Describe practical knowledge of law situations that occur within the
hospitality and travel industry and methods for correction (C2, P2 A1).

iii. Identify knowledge of how to protect guests’ safety, rights and liabilities
and distinguish between the ethics and the laws in hospitality and travel
(C4, P3, A3).

iv. Understand the various rules and regulations in sustaining the hospitality
and travel businesses and give examples of hospitality and tourism laws
and how it specifically applies to the hospitality and travel industry (C4,
P4, A3).

Communication skills, critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, information
management skills, professional ethics and leadership skills.

13. Teaching-learning and assessment strategy:


Mixed method between teacher-centred and student-centred. The assessment strategy
includes coursework assignments and an examination.

14. Synopsis:
This course aims to expose the hospitality and tourism students to the concepts,
issues and application of laws related to hospitality and tourism businesses. The
discussion of the basic of hospitality, travel, tourism and food services are to
remind the students, as practitioners, of their legal rights and responsibilities. The
topics of discussions may include contract, agency, tort, occupancy and health,
employer-employee relationship, modes of carriers, negligence, innkeeper’s
responsibilities, insurance, real estate, and licensing requirement.
