INSTRUCTIONS: Review the topic on how to construct a research title before you construct your own tentative
qualitative research title. Then DO the worksheet on how to construct a research title that follows.

REVIEW: RESEARCH TITLE

The title embodies substantive words or phrases which gives the idea of what research study is all about.
Research title must be clearly state, concise, and consists of not more than 21 words (Nieswiadomy: 1993), if
possible. The variables of the study are reflected in the title, particularly the relationship among variables and the
proposed target population.

A. Guidelines in formulating the title:

1. The title is formulated before the start of the research work. It may be revised and revised later if there is a
need.
2. The title must contain the following elements:
1) The Problem. The subject matter or research problem;
2) The Place. The setting or locale of the study;
3) The Population. The respondents or the participants involved in the study; and,
4) The Period. The time or period when the study was conducted (if the title becomes too long because of
these elements, the timeframe or period may be omitted except in evaluation studies.)

3. The title must contain the subject matter of the study, the locale of the study, the population involved, and the
period when the data were gathered or will be gathered.
4. Broad enough to include all aspects of the subject matter studied
5. Brief and concise. Avoid a long, detailed title that gives too much information.
6. Avoid using the terms, “An Analysis of,” “A Study of,” “An investigation of,” and the like. All these things
are understood to have been done or to be done when a research is conducted.
7. To shorten the title, delete the terms, “assessment” or “evaluation” if these are already emphasized in the
text.
8. The variables of the study are reflected in the research title particularly the relationship among variables and
the proposed target population.
9. If the title contains more than one line, it must be written like inverted pyramid, all words in capital letters.
10. If possible, the title should not be longer than 15 substantive words.

B. Characteristics of a good title

1. A title should give readers information about the contents of the research
2. Gives the readers some idea at the outset of what the research paper will contain
3. Choose a title that is a phrase rather than a complete sentence
4. Use no punctuation at the end of the title.
5. Do not underline or enclose it in quotation marks

EXAMPLE #1: TVL-IA

Steps on how to make a qualitative research title:

Step #1: Identifying the 5 elements in constructing a sensible title

 Do the following first, identify the five (5) elements of your research problem or topic:

1) Problem: Wiring Board Installation Project

2) Purpose: To describe the lived experience of
3) Population: the TVL-IA/EIM students
4) Place: STSHS, Sto. Tomas, Batangas
5) Period: 2nd Semester, SY: 2018-2019
Step # 2: Write the Tentative title by combining all the elements as follows,

To Describe the Lived Experience of The TVL-IA/EIM Students in Wiring Board Installation Project, STSHS, Sto.
Tomas, Batangas, 2nd Semester, SY: 2018-2019

Step # 3: Then, drop the infinitive verb [TO+VERB base], To describe

The Lived Experience of The TVL-IA/EIM Students

in Wiring Board Installation Project,

NOTE: The topic should not exceed 21 words and written in inverted pyramid style and all in capital letters.

THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF THE TVL-IA/EIM STUDENTS

IN WIRING BOARD INSTALLATION PROJECT

TAKE NOTE: in formulating the title of a research inquiry:

1) The central theme must reflect on the concise simplified title.
2) The aim is usually omitted and sometimes the population is not included.
3) The population and the period of the study are omitted but they have to be mentioned in the scope and
delimitation of the study.

EXAMPLE #2: ABM

Steps on how to make a qualitative research title:

Step #1: Identifying the 5 elements in constructing a sensible title

 Do the following first, identify the five (5) elements of your research problem or topic:

1) Problem: Distance Modular Learning using SLMs amidst Covid-19 Pandemic

2) Purpose: To describe the lived experience of
3) Population: G11 ABM learners
4) Place: STSHS, Sto. Tomas, Batangas
5) Period: 1st Semester, SY: 2020-2021

Step # 2: Write the Tentative title by combining all the elements as follows,

To Describe the Lived Experience of The G11 ABM learners on the onset of their Distance Modular Learning using
SLMs amidst Covid-19 Pandemic in Sto. Tomas Senior High School, Sto. Tomas, Batangas, 1st Semester, SY:
2020-2021.

Step # 3: Then, drop the infinitive verb [TO+VERB base], To describe

 The tentative title can be constructed as follows:

LEARNING DELIVERY MODE: A SILVER LINING EXPERIENCE REINFORCING POSITIVE TRAITS
AMIDST COVID-19 PANDEMIC
