REVIEW:
1. QUALITATIVE RESEARCH. Qualitative research is a field of social research that is carried out in naturalistic
settings and generates data largely through observations and interviews which is principally concerned with
making inferences from randomly selected samples to a larger population and primarily focused on describing
small samples in non-statistical ways.
2. RESEARCH PROBLEM/TOPIC. The first challenge of new researcher is the identification of a research
topic. A research topic or a problem is an intellectual stimulus calling for an answer in the form of scientific
inquiry. Topics or problems are general questions about relations among variables, or characteristics of the
phenomenon which a research needs to undertake (Birion et al., 2005, p.7)
The Research Problem-a problem is (1) any significant, perplexing and challenging situation, real or artificial,
the solution of which requires reflective thinking; (2) a perplexing situation after it has been translated into
question or series of questions that help determine the direction of subsequent inquiry.
The term research problem implies that investigation, inquiry or study is to be conducted, or that the problem is
ready for investigation, inquiry or study.
Example: Based on the qualitative research exemplar entitled, LIVED EXPERIENCE OF G11 ABM LEARNERS
ON THE ONSET OF MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING DELIVERY MODE: A SILVER LINING
EXPERIENCE REINFORCING POSITIVE TRAITS AMIDST COVID 19 PANDEMIC, the researcher identified
the five (5) elements of his research problem or topic as follows:
3. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM. The Research questions are stated in the Statement of the Problem
(SOP). The Two main elements of SOP:
3.1 The General Objective or the Objective/purpose of the study. The objective or purpose of the study is the
first part of the problem where the researcher states the objective. This is as a statement of long-term
2
objective expected to be achieved by the study. This is derived by the identification and crystallization of the
research problem and as reflected in the title. It is prefixed by these introductory phrases: Ex. “the main
objective of this study is to…” ex:
This qualitative study aimed to describe the lived experience of the G11 ABM learners on
the onset of their Distance Modular Learning using SLMs amidst Covid-19 Pandemic in Sto.
Tomas Senior High School, 1st Semester, SY: 2020-2021.
3.2 The Specific Objectives or specific Research Questions or investigative problems. The specific questions
which are to get answered in the study are called research questions or investigative questions, and are all in
question form. The answers to the research questions should lead to the solution of the research problem. Is
the objective or purpose of the study observable, measurable or verifiable? Focus on a clear goal or
objective. State the precise goal. The problem should be limited enough in making a definite conclusion
possible. Ex:
