Title: Some effective ways among first-year students at HUFLIT to improve English speaking
skills
CHAPTER 4
FINDINGS AND RESULTS
After one week, there are 143 students participating in the survey in total. According to
statistics, 70.6% of the students are first-year students, 9,1% of the students are second-year
students, 18,9% of those are third-year students, 1,4% are four-year students from Ho Chi Minh
City University of Foreign Language – Information Technology. Moreover, there are students
from many different majors. All the students answered the questionnaires honestly and clearly.
After having collected, here are the result of the questionnaires.

students (6,7%) with only 9 students does not find English speaking skills difficult to study.

Figure 2 presents the percentage of each problem in learning English speaking skills of
first-year students at HUFLIT. Overall, there are 113 students of 143 students lacking of
vocabulary, which was the highest figure in the chart ( 79%). In addition, lack of confidence is
the problem has the second highest percentage ( 57,3%), up to 82 students think that they do not
have enough confidence enough to speak English. Besides, it can be seen that 74 students of 143
students face the problem mispronunciation when they speak English (51,7%), as supposed to
approximately 50% of 143 students on fear of mistakes and confusing grammar. On the other
hand, there are nearly 55 students of 143 students have to face psychological problems such as
shyness and anxiety, which are the lowest figures in the chart ( nearly 40%).
4.1.3. How can you cope with problems in English speaking skills?

The findings revealed that listen to English songs is an effective approach that most
freshman at HUFLIT follow to solve their difficulties regarding speaking skills, this method
took the top frequency, 97 out of 143 students (67.8%) mentioned that they have solutions
through listening to English songs to overcome these problems, as supposed to 60.1% of 143
students watch English movies to get better in speaking skills. 79 students (55,2%) have an
agreement with the idea that practise is one of the effective ways to improve English speaking
skills, as followed by 66 students use video & voice recording Conversely, use extra-activities &
games and use “shadowing” technique seem to be the less popular, with approximately 39%
choose it.
4.1.4. Use extra-activities & games is an effective way to improve English speaking
skills.

Figure 4 shows the benefits of using extra-activites & games for freshman
HUFLIT. In this part, the researcher gives students 5 options which are “Strongly Agree”,
“Agree”, “Neutral”, “Disagree” and “Strongly disagree”. Generally, student selection trends are
different. To be more specific, 27,3% 143 students strongly agree and two-third of 143 students
(49%) agree that they can use extra-activites & games to become better in English speaking
skills. Furthermore, 22,4% of 143 students neutral with this statement. However, there are still 2
out of 143 students disagree.

4.1.5. "Watch English movies" is useful method to boost English speaking skills.
Figure 5 presents another benefit of watch English movies for HUFLIT first-year
students. Students are provided 5 options of 5 levels in this question which are “Strongly Agree”,
“Agree”, “Somewhat Agree”, “Disagree” and “Strongly disagree”. From the data collected and
analyzed, we can understand that student choices are different. Particularly, 55 out of 143
students (38,5%) strongly agree, whereas up to 68 out of 143 students agree that their English
speaking skills can be improved when they watch English movies. This statement also receives
13,3% of 143 students somewhat agree. However, there is only one student disagree with this
way.

Figure 8 illustrates advantage of video & voice recording for first-year students at
HUFLIT. Students are provided 5 options of 5 levels in this question which are “Strongly
Agree”, “Agree”, “Somewhat Agree”, “Disagree” and “Strongly disagree”. This will excessively
help students taking the survey to the most accurate understanding of this statement. From the
data collected and analyzed, there are different opinions among freshman at HUFLIT about this
statement. The number of students agree that video & voice recording is an effective to improve
English speaking skills is 72 (50.3%), This statement receives 46 of 143 students strongly agree
(32.2%) and 16.8% of 143 students somewhat agree, wheareas there is only one student disagree
with this way.
4.1.9. Practise is an useful method learning English speaking skills
