Assignment 1 – Problem Identification
Under the incidental construction of a road project bollards has to be fixed at 87 turning bay
locations along the road. Bollards can be either flexible bollards or concrete bollards. When
fixing a concrete bollard, arrow sign board including sign pole and two guide poles also
should be fixed additionally. Supply and fixing of flexible bollards are not included in the
approved project bill of quantities. But considering the tendency to damage by collisions,
durability and maintenance issues project consultant has identified thirty-seven critical
locations which requires flexible bollards. So it should be developed as a variation by project
consultant and should be approved by the client. For that purpose, consultant has requested
proposal from the main contractor of the project. Main contractor requested quotations from
several suppliers for suppling and fixing of flexible bollards and depending on received
Proforma invoices and considering the required project specifications project consultant has
selected a supplier whose unit rate per flexible bollard is the least. Supplier further agreed to
give discount if number of units is more than or equal to fifty. Considering all the rates
consultant has prepared a cost comparison of four different options to obtain the approval
from the client carry out the work.

Objectives of the client is to improve road safety by providing bollards which are durable and
which can endure collision during and accident. And also periodical maintenance should be
reduced. And also the cost for the variation also should be minimized.
