In my family, the one who has the most unusual job is my cousin, Oscar. He is a podiatrist. A
podiatrist is a foot doctor. Another name for this kind of physician is chiropodist. So, what Oscar does is
treat foot problems.
When I first learnt about Oscar’s job, I was very surprised. I did not know that there was a special
kind of doctor for our feet. The idea of Oscar examining people’s smelly feet and toes was rather funny to
me. However, as I learnt more about Oscar’s job, I realised how important it is.
It is not easy to become a podiatrist. Like any doctor, podiatrist has to study for four years in
medical school. After medical school, he or she has to go for three more years of training in a hospital. A
podiatrist works in a hospital or a clinic.
Once, I asked Oscar why did he chose to be a foot doctor. He grinned and said “why not?” He treats
people of all ages. A lot of things can go wrong with feet, such as infections and sprains. Oscar told me that
he enjoys giving advice to his patients and helping them to take care of their feet so that they can walk
without pain. This job suits his personality.
