Activity: Optimize faces


In this activity, you will convert B-surface faces in a part imported from another
system to analytic faces.

Identify the body type and features


1. Open syn2_optimize_end_cap_from_jt.

The part file originated from another system and the data was extracted from a
JT file.
In the Part Navigator, notice that the part contains only a sheet body consisting
of aJT_BODY feature.

Verify the face types


1. Select Top Border bar→Type Filter list→Face.
2. Drag a rectangle around the body to select all faces.

3. Choose Tools tab→Utilities group→Object Information .

In the Information window, notice that all of the faces are non-parametric B-
surface or Trimmed B-Surface types.
The default setting is to convert JT facet faces to B-surfaces. You can change
this default in the Gateway customer defaults, under JT Files, on the Extract
Exact Data tab, underFace Simplification.

4. Close the Information window.

5. In the background of the graphics window, right-click and choose Refresh.

Convert the faces to simpler types

1. Choose Home tab→Synchronous Modeling group→Optimize Face .


2. In the Settings group, set the following:

o Clean Body before Optimize =


o Report =

3. Drag a rectangle to select the entire part.

4. Click the middle mouse button.


5. In the Optimize Face message box, click Yes.
6. In the Information window, notice that all of the B-surface faces were
converted to planes and cylinders.
7. Close the part now or close all parts when you exit the session.
