Chapter 1: Project and its Background (Midterm)

A Youth Environmental Advocacy: Kalinga, Aksyon, Pagbabago Para sa


Kalikasan
Project Description

In an attempt to get the public more involved and knowledgeable in the worries
and issues of our environment and agriculture, we created this project. Right now is the
best time to try and reach for more people. Even a small step as segregating trash or a
big one such as gardening is a big win. Project KAPPK aims to create awareness
regarding environmental activities that can be easily done at home. Our advocacy not
only strives to spread awareness but also tries to get involved with real people and try to
help in any way we can. By using social media as the main instrument and taking
advantage of the increased use of social media during quarantine, we are confident that
our advocacy will be able to reach out to our target audiences effortlessly.

Project KAPPK is an acronym of our environmental youth advocacy: Kalinga,


Aksyon, Pagbabago Para sa Kalikasan. Our concern for the environment inspires us to
create an action to change our nature for the better. Through creating an Instagram
page, we will be able to spread information by posting trivia and facts, and interactive
posts. Eye-catching or “aesthetic” designs are popular these days for social media
users, especially to the youth. Using Instagram as our main social media platform
pushes us to make our posts appealing to our viewers because, in that way, they will
acquire knowledge about our environment while getting entertained by the visuals.

Background of the project 

As youth now living in the 21st century, we have witnessed the innovation of
technology and the rise of social media platforms in our world. According to Rogers
(2018), social media is the perfect global platform to promote the protection of our
environment and biodiversity by serving as an eyeopener to help people become aware
of different environmental problems. We strongly believe that by using these platforms
as a way to reach other people, we can help them and raise their environmental
awareness. These can greatly contribute not only to their well-being but also to our
environment as well. In our environmental advocacy, we aim to establish projects and
help minimize the environmental problems that are tremendously prevalent today.

Through the different environmental concerns that we have witnessed and


encountered, we have discovered that the environmental issues that we are currently
facing are the poor implementation of ecological solid waste management, lack of
people's environmental awareness and action, and our country's poor state of irrigation
system. A lot of research studies had also demonstrated the causes of these
environmental problems. According to Atienza (2011), the reason why waste
management has become a major problem in the Philippines is because of the rapid
population growth, urbanization, and modernization in the country. Furthermore, an
article entitled “Philippines Agriculture Saddled by Poor Irrigation Systems" (2018)
stated that our country's current irrigation system has a great impact not only on the
livelihood of our farmers but also on our environment because of its high water
consumption. This is why it is very important to be aware of these environmental
problems because these mostly affect our vulnerable communities, such as our local
farmers. With the projects we have formed, we will be able to further identify the root of
these problems and help eliminate their detrimental effects.

Our first project is Hosting an IG page. This online platform will become our vital
tool in promoting environmental action and advocacy. Our next project will be
"Encouraging Engagement Through Interactive Posts", and this will serve as a
stimulator to encourage people to participate in our online activities with regards to our
environment. In addition to this, we will post trivia and facts using social media to raise
and spread environmental awareness. We will also share DIY activities and tips on how
people can contribute to taking care of our environment and adopting an environment-
friendly lifestyle that will surely help people learn and remember the importance of the
3R's. Lastly, we will create an activity called “Capture Nature” where we will feature
fascinating nature photos to serve as a reminder of how beautiful our environment is
and how important it is to have a strong appreciation and value towards it.
By engaging and reaching out to people through social media platforms, we can
achieve our goal to contribute to the environment. As our project title stated, "Kalinga,
Aksyon, Pagbabago Para sa Kalikasan", our projects will focus on urging people to act
because we believe that we all can do something to create a positive change to our
community. These projects will be our baseline to further adhere to positive changes
that we can do for our environment.

Target Beneficiaries

Environmental and agricultural problems are one of the most critical global
challenges of our times. The public (especially the youth, parents and children) and
social media users are the chosen main target beneficiary of the proposed project.
Young people who can adept at spreading new habits and technologies are well placed
to participate and be involve in our advocacy. With them participating and engaging in
our environmental action, they can help us reach our goal to promote environmental
action and raise awareness. The action and help of the people can also influence and
encourage people to adopt an environmental-friendly lifestyle. Parents’ active
involvement and direct engagement with their children, thus, can lead to social and
environmental changes. They also have a vital influence on their children's
environmental behavior and awareness. The activities will help them mobilize and
motivate to take effort in promoting environmental action and advocacy. This project can
ensure that this can surely be helpful to spread awareness and minimize the
environmental problems.

To promote environmental awareness and action to the public, especially the


youth, through our proposed activities.

agricultural state

4) To encourage people in engaging with online activities related to the environment
5) To help people adopt an environment-friendly lifestyle and gain more knowledge

6) To promote appreciation for the beauty of our nature and environment

Strategy

1) We will monitor our daily engagements to the public and upload environment-
related contents.
2) We will only get information from trusted websites to validate its credibility and
accuracy and make our contents visually appealing.
3) We will test out the applicability of the YouTube tutorials first before we share it
online and we will also make sure that all of the contents that we will spread
online are correct and credible.
4) We will make our posts entertaining and informative and we will make sure to
interact with everyone who wants to participate in our activities to boost our
engagement. We will also brainstorm fun activities for people to engage with like
polls and games.
5) We will share our own lifestyle habits that are environment-friendly and our
planting or gardening tips as well.
6) We will showcase our photography skills by featuring our own nature photos on
our Instagram page to show it to our audience.

The period of implementation will be from May 24, 2021 to May 28, 2021.

Success Indicator

The success indicator will be when the IG page has reached 50 followers and
has engaged with at least 10 people.

Discussion of the Planned Activities

It is an irrefutable fact that our world is slowly dying at our hands. We saw how
our actions affect our world that even a drop of water has a big impact on the
environment. Thus, we want to take an initiative to protect our environment in ways that
we can do now, given the current circumstances we are in. This is the reason why we
want to promote environmental awareness and action through our proposed activities.
The first activity is "Hosting an Instagram Page" which will be our dedicated medium for
the dissemination of the posts. This is where we will implement the activities for our
environmental advocacy. The second activity is the posting of trivia and facts which will
not only keep the audience’s interest but will also raise the awareness of people which
can make them move into taking action for the environment. The third activity is
establishing DIY activities where in we will be sharing creative and useful creations that
people can create at home. This will not only help unleash their creativeness and
resourcefulness but also this will remind them about the importance of the 3R’s. The
fourth activity is encouraging environmental engagement through interactive posts like
polls, GIFs, and memes. This will let proud plantitos and plantitas share their precious
plants and even share their ways of taking care of them. The fifth activity is the posting
of environmental-friendly lifestyle and planting tips. This will help people gain more
knowledge about planting and adopt a greener lifestyle. Lastly, the sixth activity is the
“Nature Capture” where the audience can share their amazing photos with nature and it
will be featured on our IG page. This will make people appreciate the nature even more
and remind them to take care of its beauty. We believe that through these activities, we
can make a positive change for our environment.
