Mrs. Potato Head by Melanie Martinez: A Critique Review

The music video entitled ‘Mrs. Potato Head’ by Melanie Martinez is all about a girl who faced
a lot of consequence because of having a plastic surgery to fulfill her own and her husband
wants to make her more beautiful and to get along with the beauty of women in the modern
world. This music video highlights about ‘Mrs. Potato Head’ who happen to take a plastic
surgery because of the reason that her husband don’t find him attractive anymore and so she
was persuaded to take the surgery that will make her most beautiful among the girls. That is
why Mrs. Potato Head took it even though she really don’t want it. She became not contented
with the beauty she had and spent so much money just to take the surgery. Mrs. Potato Head
was been manipulated by his husband and the surgery did not went well. It did not turn out the
way she expected to happen. From a beautiful lady she become a monstrous one. In the end,
she was been left by her husband who happen to already found another woman, resulting of
Mrs. Potato Head to become so insecure and stress about the way she look. Thus, feminism
approach was used in the song.
This movie proves that every woman was been criticized according to their physical
appearance and willing to do anything so they will be accepted in the modern world. As the
lyrics stated, “No one will love you if you’re unattractive” meaning that before someone loved
you, they first judge you according on your looks. Also to achieve beauty, a woman should take
all the pain like taking pills, needles, and the surgery itself. But on the other hand, beauty should
not be based on one’s physical appearance because somehow it will fade as the time goes by.
The real beauty is inside our soul, the contentment and the confidence we have. Moreover, the
lyrics also stated, “Potatoes turn to French Fries” told us that as a woman who have hundred
percent trust in ourselves just like a whole potato who turned to be a French fries because of
those people who step on every women’s dignity. They are breaking their confidence and do not
know how to put their feet on the ground. Lastly, when you love a person, accept their flaws and
imperfections. Just like the lyrics in the song, “Stay forever, even her face don’t stay together”.
But in the movie, Mrs. Potato Head’s husband left him in the end and it’s a lesson for Mr. Potato
Head that he should be the one who should stay and support Mrs. Potato Head through ups and
down. “Will a pretty face make it better?”, absolutely not because that beauty is just made out of
plastic that cost a hundred thousand dollars. If a man don’t love you for who you are, pretty face
doesn’t matter, they will leave you eventually just like in the movie.
As a whole, I conclude that the video clearly presented the message they want to interpret
to us. It uses a flashback scene that make the video better. But some scenes should be blur
because it is not appropriate for kids and honestly it creeps me out. However, it shows a real life
situation of feminism approach that make it believable and relatable especially to women.
Hence, it also shows that every women dreamed to be beautiful but we should be reminded to
be ourselves. The music video gave us a lesson on how the beauty of a woman should be
handled and that we should be proud on what we have.
