Year : SY 2019-2020

The purpose of the study is to give a better understanding on stereotyping, specially career gender

stereotypes that impact students career choice. This study benefits the students that find it hard to choose a

career because of the influences and standards of the society.

The study is a correlational quantitative research we will utilize the survey research design

where data will be collected from the participants, analyzed and examined statistically.

Having the data being analyzed and assess, the researchers are able to come up to the following

findings, when it comes to gender, female respondents are the one who experience stereotyping than

other genders. Career such as Film Director and Newscaster mostly experienced stereotyping. The

researcher also found out that among the respondents 95.60% of the variance in career choice is not

predicted by gender and 4.40% of the variance in gender is predicted by career choice

Keywords: Stereotyping, Career Choice

Chapter 1

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

In March of 2020, the World Health Organization has classified Covid-19 as a pandemic that poses

a current threat to humanity. This pandemic forced several activities to be shut down globally, including

face-to-face classes, resulting in a massive crisis in the education. As a result, universities and school

departments are looking for alternatives and they choose digital learning as the platform of education in the

pandemic-stricken world.

The challenges and opportunities of online learning or what we called digital learning is diverse.

Students can now learn the lesson from their homes in a click of a button via gadgets. Yet these same

gadgets bring harm to the students because just like in the old books students need a long time to learn a

lesson all while facing the screen. Students can be distracted in using gadgets because digital learning is

facilitated by internet and the social media thereby students unknowingly neglected their school work by

focusing their minds at random information. Having school works not done and the mind not adequate for a

long-time exposure from artificial light, students experience stress from these mental pressure. To relieve

the stress mounting from these factors, students devised numerous ways to cope with the pressures of the

digital learning mode. This research is all about identifying the different ways students of the San Mateo San

Mateo Senior High School cope with the pressure of the digital learning mode.

Theoretical Framework

According to Al-Sowygh, stress is a bio-psychosocial model that describes the result of an

organism's inability to react appropriately to mental, emotional, or physical demands, whether real or

imaginary (2013). Stress can have several forms and can have a negative impact on a person's wellbeing,

regardless of race, age, or socioeconomic status. There are several sources of stress; however, the level of

stress is primarily determined by physical fitness, interpersonal relationships, job pressures, the degree of

responsibilities and dependency; and different types of commitment (Shamsuddin et al., 2013; Soliman,

2014). According to Hung and Care (2011); Smith, Rosenberg, and Timothy Haight (2014) Failure in school

work, financial difficulties, health problems, the death of a family member or acquaintance, and other social

problems can all trigger depression in students. In the literature, stress has been linked to physical, social,

and behavioral issues. Rage, fear, nervous tension, sadness, and boredom are some of the psychological

symptoms of stress. Under-eating or over-eating, increased smoking and alcohol use, and drug abuse are

all examples of direct behavior that may accompany a high level of stress (Esia-donkoh, Yelkpieri, & Esia-

donkoh, 2011; Hung & Care, 2011; Ramos, 2011).

Employing coping strategies to decrease stress is an essential action to prevent the harmful effects

of prolonged stress (William et al., 2010). Coping strategies refer to the specific efforts that people use to

master, reduce or minimize stressful event. Coping is a multi-faceted process and includes various

strategies of which some are functional than others (Gnilka, Chang, & Dew, 2012). Chao (2012) identifies

two important ways of managing stress; namely social support and dysfunctional coping strategies. Social

support is the strategy where people find comfort and support from families and friends to manage stress.

Dysfunctional coping strategies such as concentrating in expressing emotions. Lazarus and Folkman cited

in (Chao, 2012) that these strategies are problem-focused ways in managing stress talking about the

attempts to engage or face the perceived stress.

INPUT. The input comprises the aspects that the researchers want to determine, identify and to

find out such as if the students had positive or negative remarks on the digital learning mode, how they are

coping with the stress and what are the techniques they use to cope with the pressures of the digital

learning mode.

PROCESS. The process contains the method that the researchers are going to use to be able to

obtain the data necessary in making a valid conclusion about the study. The researchers will be using the

interview method in a structured interview.

OUTPUT. In the output, the action after the research will be seen. After conducting the research,

the researchers will be going to propose an advocacy plan like a virtual seminar for the students to learn

about the lessons and benefits in the study.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents different studies and literature that will give prior and deep understanding

regarding the situation of distant learning in the pandemic and its effects on the students. It will also cover

how the students cope with the pressure of distant learning.

Foreign Literature about the situation of education around the world in the middle of the pandemic

According to Mseleku (2020) the unexpected outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic affected every single

aspect of human life, not only in developing countries, but across the world. While every country is impacted by this

pandemic, numerous studies have been published on the pandemic, only few studies addresses the depth of E

learning and E- teaching outcomes, associated challenges and opportunities during the period of Covid-19. The

literature presented a number of learning and teaching challenges faced by academics and students. These

challenges include the inability to access or use the online learning and teaching tools; difficulties to adjust

particularly for students living in rural areas and those from low-income families; and associated stress, depression

and anxiety.

Accoding to Chandra (2021) due to COVID-19 pandemic, the government around the world has closed all the

educational institutions to control the spread of disease, which is creating a direct impact on students, educators and

institutions. The sudden shift from the physical classroom to virtual space is creating a disruption among students.

and because of this there was distance education and many students were stressed about how they could provide

technology, and because of this other students worked so that they could provide for their educational needs.

Foreign Literature in the effects of digital learning to students and how they cope with the pressures of digital
learning.

Almomani et. al (2021) found out that COVID-19 pandemic heavily impacted the lives of students in Jordan. The

students were unhappy about the quality and quantity of the given materials, online exams. Furthermore,

technological and usability issues, such as internet speed and affordability, as well as electronic functionality, have

been described as obstacles to a good online learning experience.

Akpinar (2020) cited that despite being considered the most effective alternative to traditional learning during this

pandemic, digital learning has been known to be a major source of mental health issues among students. The lack of

interaction is a significant aspect that has affected the ability of the students to experience the optimal benefits of

online learning as digital learning with interactive platforms cannot replicate the interaction with peers and teachers

that is experienced in the traditional learning. In addition digital learning is an isolating experience for the students

and are easily distracted. It meant that students lose focus when they are doing their activities and listening to their

teachers by checking social media and playing games. As a result students experienced increased stress because

they couldn’t grasp the lesson by their loss of focus.

Mheidly et. al (2020) tells that Covid-19 has influenced people to increased their use of media applications that allow

teleconferencing, telecommuting, online learning, and social connections. To cope with the tension caused by

repetitive use, students can practice fostering stress and burnout tolerance, increasing the number of breaks,

directing fitness campaigns at students, implementing healthier activities, cutting back on bad behaviors, and many

other things.

Local Studies in the situation of Education in the Philippines

Rotas et. al (2020) said that most educational systems across the world have migrated to digital learning modality as

a measure against the spread of the coronavirus disease. The COVID-19 has impacted not only the economic,

psychological, and social aspects of the world but also particularly, the educational sector to a great extent. Today's

situation where distance learning is done by students through technology, the government knows that they are not

able to provide other students with tools for digital learning yet they continue ignore them so many students today

have difficulty with this situation of no tools for digital learning.

In the context of social impact, the COVID-19 crisis in the country appears that the effect is on the lower-income

classes Traditional classes were postponed due to lockdown and faced current challenges with virtual learning). In

particular, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are prompted to establish management approaches regarding

pandemics to encourage positive health behavior among students. There is still enough evidence that students

among two local colleges in Southern Philippines practice measures to deal with anxiety during this threat of global

health security. Schools should start training students and teachers on the application of online-blended learning

approach and improves the ability of the students for resources and capacities of both teachers and students. The

government subsidy and educational support in the future should include capacitating Filipino students in using

online tools considering health challenges like this or other community emergencies during any future.

Developing countries such as the Philippines has focused on the technological or contextual challenges ,as such it

fails to provide a comprehensive view of the problems facing digital learning. As a result the Philippines is not ready

for an implementation of digital learning in a massive scale. For example, the Philippine government through

its Local Government Units provides gadgets and internet access to its students. But it doesnt address the problems

on the types of lessons the teachers will use. The most common format of lessons are PowerPoint files without voice

narration. Consequently, students who are more inclined to audio and visual learning had learning difficulties in this

type of lessons.

Local Literature in the effects of digital learning to students and how they cope with the pressures of digital learning.

Rotas et. Al (2020) categorized 12 factors of stress for the students of digital learning: inadequate learning

resources; electric power interruptions; vague learning contents; overloaded lesson activities; limited teacher

scaffolds; poor peer communication; conflict with home responsibilities; poor learning environment; financial related

problems; physical health compromises; and mental health struggles.

Surprisingly, in a study done by Baticulon et al, (2021) revealed that technical limitations such as power interruptions

and internet cost are not perceived by students as the primary cause for stress. Instead they experienced more

stress because of their personal study habits, situations at home and their interaction with educators. Students

admitted that they lack self-motivation in their studies because of the activities that are vague in instructions and they

are only explained in text or briefly discussed only in video lessons. As a result students use more time to

comprehend the lesson the lessons therefore increasing the stress over time.

According to Baticulon et al, (2021) educators should enhance interactivity with their students, guide them in

their studies with informative lesson and give them clear instructions in activities, reduce the load of activity into

what is essential and create learning tools that should be engaging, entertaining yet devoid of clutter to prevent

distraction. As for the students, they should be guided to develop self-regulated learning strategies that includes

time management, critical thinking and effort regulation.

Rotas et. al (2021) categorized coping strategies in which Filipino students who are surveyed used during this

pandemic. It includes looking for good space and time, borrowing learning resources, seeking support from peers,

approaching the teachers, practicing time management, doing learning tasks ahead, extending the time for learning

tasks, diverting attention, regulating the self, taking extra jobs, crying and praying .Despite the negativities, students

still find themselves surviving in a remote learning set-up through coping mechanisms to manage their stress.

Synthesis

Chandra (2021) cited that the sudden shift from the physical classroom to virtual space creates a

disruption among students. Many students were stressed about how they could provide technology, while

other students worked so that they could provide for their educational needs. Not only that but digital

learning is an isolated engagement meaning that students lose their focus in learning, instead they play

games or scroll through social media for entertainment. As a result students unknowingly wasted their time

and neglected their studies through distractions exacerbating their stress over digital learning (Akpinar,

2020). In the study of Rotas et al, (2020) technical problems are a primary instigator of stress for students. It

includes inadequate learning resources such as gadgets; unstable internet connectivity, electrical problems

and poor learning environment. Next is the lack of communication with peers and teachers. Lastly is the

overload of school activities and its vague instructions on how to do the tasks. Amplified by the constant

anxiety with threat of getting a COVID-19 infection, students experience unbearable stress on their minds

(Baloran, 2020). According to Rotas et al, (2021) in order to cope with the stresses during their engagement

with digital learning, students used a number of personal coping strategies. Communicating with relatives

and friends to relieve stress, laughing and encouraging yourself, doing odd jobs to earn money and diverting

attention to other things at home are all part of it.
