Elysium

When man seeks for luxury, he would be willing to do anything he can just to achieve
it. This is how I would describe most of the characters of the film “Elysium”. In this movie,
all the main characters have things that they are seeking involving the artificial planet
“Elysium”. While watching this science fiction film, you would somehow see how the film
is a sci-fi version of some countries. In this reflection paper, I would be expressing my
impressions on the film, how the film for me represented some things in our current reality,
and some of the technology that was presented in it.

For my first impressions about the film, I would be pointing out some things about the
film. In Elysium, the rich and the poor are divided where the rich would live on the artificial
planet “Elysium” where advance technology like med-bays where you could use to become a
very healthy human and Earth where poverty and diseases are abundant and no way to solve
these problem. For me this is a representation of what is happening currently around us. The
rich have access to all the luxuries while the less fortunate are forced to struggle, to add to
this the rich and those who are in power support each other to get what they want. The
residents of Earth showed that they would do anything even if it is illegal just to have access
to something that they deserve. Talking about the technology, in the year 2154, we already
have miraculous health care, spaceships, fully-functioning robots, neural implants, and
exoskeletons. Although these technologies were already created, the use for these are only
given to the privileged and it made me think that even after a hundred years people are still
being driven by their greed and it was disappointing. Although I said it was disappointing,
some part of me also thought “As expected humans still won’t change”. One technology that
I thought that was also somehow good and bad is the neural implants, where you could store
any kind of information but risk yourself to be in danger because of what can be put on the
implants.

In this paper, I put focus on the idea that even though we have all these technology,
people would still try to covet things for their self-interest rather than do things for the
common good. For me, it made me think if things that happened on the film would also
happen in real life, would people act the same as the one in film or be different. Ending this
paper, in terms of my overall view of the film, I guess it was a good watch but it won’t be one
of those movies that I would like to view again.
