ABSTRACT:

RASHTRIYA ISPAT NIGAM LIMITED (RNIL), popularly known as Visakhapatnam

Steel plant or Vizag Steel is a major steel producer in Visakhapatnam. The company has
grown from a very small industry to a company with 3-billion-dollar turnover, registering an
enormous growth in just four years. The company is founded in 1971, and it mainly
concentrates on producing value-added steel. It is the largest single-site plant in India and
Minor Asia.

RNIL is one of those companies which involve all the departments for the final output. Here
Communication system and Electronics plays a major role in between all these departments.
This enables the employees in the company to handle all the situations with ease.

The company now allows students and learners to be given a chance to learn the working and
functioning of the company and the plant by giving the eligible students the opportunity to do
an internship of 2 weeks span.

I have experienced all departmental works during my training period. Design, manufacturing,
and production of steel takes up most of the knowledge work at the Steel plant. No doubt
every real situation is unique but we need a set of theoretical tools of knowledge can help to
create solutions for handling such situation.

To prepare me with such challenging situation, I allowed going to VISAKHAPATNAM

STEEL PLANT, VISAKHAPATNAM by SRM University, Chennai. The training period
was of 2 WEEKS. Though it was a short period training, I tried my best to gain a lot of
knowledge from it.

The information has been collected at plant through interaction with officers of different
sections and our training co-ordinator.

ROLE OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION IN
RINL-VSKP

Electronics and Communication is, even though the smallest department in this company, it’s
an important department under the name “TELECOM” whose main role is surveillance and
communication of the plant. Here at Steel plant, communication is in three phases.

I. GENERAL PURPOSE COMMUNICATION.

II. PROCESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS.
III. MONITORING & SIGNALLING COMMUNICATIONS.

I. GENERAL PURPOSE COMMUNICATION:

The following facilities are provided under the general-purpose communication systems.

 3000 lines electronic exchange in the plant.

 2000 lines electronic exchange in the township.
 100 lines electronic exchange in VISAKHA STEEL GENERAL HOSPITAL.
 44 lines Electronic exchange in HILLTOP GUEST HOUSE.

All the exchanges are interconnected with interplant telephone network comprising of 200
pair and 100 pair capacity telephone cables of 0.63mm diameter copper conductor. There are
few smaller exchanges like the shop floor exchanges. Traffic, Gas Control, Power, Water
Management Plant Control, EXCOM for Senior Officers, Hilltop guest house exchange,
UKKU HOUSE exchanges etc.
3000 LINES ELECTRONIC EXCHANGE IN PLANT:

2000 ES T/S EXCHANGE:

II. PROCESS COMMUNICATION:
The main function of process communication is to create a platform for communication
between all the departments or inside of the departments

This communication process consists of communication systems like,

 DISPATCHER COMMUNICATION.
 LOUD SPEAKER CONFERENCE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM.
 L.S.I.C. - LOUD SPEAKER INTERCOM COMMUNICATION.
 L.S.B.C. - LOUD SPEAKER BROADCASTING COMMUNICATION.
 VERY HIGH-FREQUENCY SETS.
 INDUSTRIAL PUBLIC-ADDRESS SYSTEM.
 HOTLINE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM.
 WALKIE TALKIES
 SUPERVISOR CONTROL AND DATA ACQUISITION (SCADA).
 SHIFT INDICATING SIRENS.
 FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS.

SCADA:
SCADA is preferably used places where risk is more and also the areas where the risk is
more and also the areas where the work is handled by means of Power, Gas, Water.

HOW SCADA WORKS?

SCADA means SUPERVISORY CONTROL AND DATA ACQUISTION. This is a system
for remote monitoring and control that operates with coded signals over communication
channels. It is a control system connected to a REMOTE TERMINAL UNIT (RTU) OR
REMOTE TELECONTROL UNIT.

RTU is a device which transmits the information to SCADA and in turn receives the
commands to operate.
III. MONITORING AND SIGNALLING SYSTEMS:

 CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION SYSTEM (CCTV)

 CENTRAL FIRE ALARM SIGNALLING SYSTEM.
 INTERNET PROTOCOL VIDEO MONITORING (I.P.V.M)

ROLE OF CCTV AND IPVM:

 CCTV, even though it is an outdated technology, it is used for motion detection and
surveillance.
 IPVM is the latest technology. Here each cam is assigned with an IP address and
internet/intranet data connection as per requirement. Due to this, the admin can be
accessed to data anywhere in the world

DATA COMMUNICATION NETWORK:

 These are used for handling huge amounts of data related to marketing, finance
material management etc. that are linked to the company.
 These terminals are connected to the Central Computer through a complex circuit
made up of multiplexers, clusters, controllers, switches, hubs, and modems.
 From the Central Computer building, Telephone cables are laid to connect the clusters
controllers.
 At present, the old coaxial cable network is replaced with fiber optic network (open
system).
INTRANET:
 An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet technologies to securely
share any part of an organization's information or operational systems with its
employees
 An intranet is built from the same concepts and technologies used for the Internet,
such as client-server computing and the Internet Protocol Suite
 CCTV MONITORS IN BF CONTROL ROOM, AT REHEATING FURNACE,
MILLS, IN MILLS CONTROL ROOM, CENTRAL FIRE ALARM SIGNALLING
PANEL , SHOP FLOOR INTERCOM EXCHANGES, LOUD SPEAKER
INTERCOM SYSTEM INSTALLED IN LMMM, WRM & TPP
 All the above systems work under the Intranet provided by the TELECOM and used
mainly for the IPVM Technology.
Below are some images of the plant taken on our phones with the required permissions from
the respective authorities.
GUIDANCE:
I was under the guidance of Mr. PRABHAKAR (CHIEF MANAGER IN
TELECOMMUNICATION) for the duration of 15 days training.

TRAINING SCHEDULE:
In the entire training program session, I was given the task of learning about the
communication can be done between different domains in the company for achieving
co-ordination and team work ensuring the perfect result at the output.

During the first week, our team was taken to the electronic exchange plant where the
broadcasting of communication in industry starts exchanging to different lines. Here, we
learned how an telephone exchange works and

The following week, our team was taken to the work field where at the field, thousands of
people work with great efforts. People over there work in such dangerous and dead zone
areas only by using basic safety measures.

And of course, here is the point where communication plays a vital role. Hence we were been
explained the organization of Telecommunication in those work fields manually. This
actually helped me even to know and gain knowledge about the field work.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Though the two weeks long training was not enough time to learn everything going on, I did
my best to gather as much the knowledge and experience at the VISAKHAPATNAM STEEL
PLANT.
The officers were very helpful with their guidance. Anyone who is enthusiastic and curious
about the processes was given attention and the doubts were cleared quickly.
It was very necessary to be attentive enough to understand all the processes going on and
explained during the visits.
It was fascinating to watch how the theoretical knowledge gained during the subjects, studied
in the college came into practicality and into industrial use on such a large scale.
This opportunity of visiting one of the best companies resulted into a really good learning
experience.
Due to the TELECOM, they are able to achieve co-ordinated work along with a great output
with great efficiency of time and resources. One of the examples of using TELECOM in the
plant is to instruct the Crane driver to perfectly close the doors of the Coke Ovens through RF
Walkie Talkies or RF Channel Broadcasting. Because sometime it is not visually accessible
to the driver of the crane to close the door of the Ovens and which require help from person
or worker who can be near the door and far away from the driver
