5B/5C Mole worksheet for marks

1. Deneil is provided with two solutions, M and N. Solution M is aqueous hydrochloric acid containing 3.6 g dm-3. Solution N is an
aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide which has been prepared using a certain mass of sodium hydroxide in 1 dm3 of solution.
Deneil was asked to titrate solution M against 25 cm3 of solution N in order to determine the concentration of sodium hydroxide. It
was found that 22 cm3 of solution M was required to neutralise 25 cm3 of solution N.

a) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction between solution M and solution N. [1]

….…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

b) Calculate the molar concentration of solution M. [2] Ar H = 1, Cl = 35.5

….…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

c) Calculate the number of moles of hydrochloric acid used in the titration. [1]

….…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

d) Calculate the molar concentration of solution N. [2]

….…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

e) Calculate the mass concentration of solution N. Note the molar mass of sodium hydroxide is 40 g mol -1 [1]

….…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
