Mission Statement

WHAT IS PLASTIC?
● Plastics are man-made polymers and are produced from natural
materials like coal and oil.
● A lot of materials are manufactured from plastic. Despite being
abundant around us, it isn’t biodegradable.
● It doesn’t decompose, like paper and food, instead, it hangs around in
the environment, for hundreds of years.
● The most common use of plastic in our daily lives is for carrying bags,
drinks bottles, and crisp packets.
● Not all types/kinds of plastics can be recycled.
● All the animals that live in and around the college premises may get
affected due to the improper disposal of these plastics.
● The small animals can get trapped in bigger plastic products, such as
carry bags or food packaging covers and boxes.
● There are a lot of organizations and NGOs trying to help tackle this
problem and cut the amount of plastic we use by spreading
awareness and introducing alternate means.
● So, we thought as students, to bring a change regarding this at least
in our college.
Value
Proposition
● Students are often keen to make a difference and willing to make small
changes if they can see the bigger purpose/feel part of a larger
movement. A simple switch can have a huge multiplier effect.
● We can reduce hundreds or even thousands of single-use plastics by
making simple switches in the canteen.
● Preventing pollution by reducing the amount of new raw materials
used (nearby college areas).
● Saves money, since reusable items work out cheaper than constantly
purchasing more plastic.
● Animals around the college premises will be safe too.
● Blocking of the drains won't be happening after we reduce the plastic
waste.
Assumptions
● Approaching the canteen to reduce the waste.
● Urging college events management to go plastic-free.
● Encouraging eco-friendly (or) biodegradable items.
● Reviewing the stationary list and suggesting plastic-free alternatives.
● Colleges\Schools are also often a great base for broader changes.
Many students and teachers may start to adopt plastic-free practices
in their everyday lives outside of colleges too.
● By bringing our own reusable coffee cup, or taking our assets in
newsletters to raise awareness and share solutions.
● Learning what plastics we are using on a daily basis and slowly picking
one at a time to substitute with an alternative can have a huge impact
over time.
“BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION, NOT THE POLLUTION,”
● Following the 4R principle.
“REDUCE, REFUSE, REUSE, RECYCLE”

RESEARCH:
● We surveyed 80 students, 10 lectures, and 10 sanitary staff
in our college vnr vjiet.
● More than 1000 people come to our college every day.
● We empathized with their problems by posing questions
using the method of 5 W’s.
● We classified them based on their designations like:
❏ Students
❏ Lectures
❏ Sanitary Staff

SURVEY:
• 1. What kind of challenges faced by you due to plastic usage and its disposal?
• 2. Are you aware of plastic pollution and the impact it has on the
environment??
• 3. Which alternative would you prefer using to plastic, why??
• 4. Which of the following ideas would you be interested in?
• Extra charge for using plastic goods
• Getting a small amount of money back off your purchase for using a reusable
bag/cup/bottle
• 5. Is any other idea regarding the above question specify??
• 6. Do you think plastic pollution affects your surroundings only or you too??

INSIGHTS
Some people responded that (plastic) gained with it
many advantages –
• Easy availability
• Low cost
• Minimal weight
• Could be moulded into any shape
• Didn’t break easily and didn’t degrade easily
• Single used plastics are used once and thrown away.
• They accumulate in the water bodies and choke the drains.
• Recently no events were conducted by the management
regarding plastic usage in the college.
• To introduce a collection of the plastic waste management
fee.
• Local actions are required for mitigating plastic pollution.
• Respiratory-related problems like asthma, suffocation are
being faced by some people due to its disposal.
• Animals and birds are being hurt due to eating food along
with plastic covers etc...

Primary Needs
Secondary Needs
 Holding a film screening or talk that conveys problems faced
by plastic usage and its disposal
 Organizing regular cleanup events and making people aware
of the consequences of improper
 disposal of plastics
 College should appoint more sanitary staff for proper
disposal of plastic
 Implementing the idea of 4R principles i.e. Reduce, Reuse
Recycle and Restore in the college premises
 Segregating plastic into recycling and non-recyclable for
effective disposal
Latent Needs
Tell us about your experience with the project
 From this project I understood the need of reducing and
avoiding plastic waste and its disposal vnr vjiet.
 Plastic usage has become a part of our daily life.
 Almost everybody knows the effect of plastic but people
show more interest in it because of its advantages.
 So at least we as a student should bring the change in our
college vnr vjiet
