EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Shopee is a global technology firm based in Singapore that specializes in e-


commerce. Shopee was founded in Singapore in 2015 by Sea Group (formerly known as
Garena) and has since expanded to Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, the
Philippines, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. As of 2021, it will service consumers in
Southeast and East Asia, as well as many Latin American nations such as Brazil and
Mexico, who wish to buy and sell items online. Because of the mobile and social
components integrated into the strategy, Shopee was named one of the "5 revolutionary
ecommerce startups we witnessed in 2015" by Tech In Asia for its technological
development and broad size.

Shopee debuted in Singapore in February 2015 as a social-first, mobile-centric marketplace


where users can explore, shop, and sell. The asset-light platform claims to make online
shopping easy and secure for both merchants and customers by integrating logistical and
payment assistance. To compete with other e-commerce websites in the region, such as
Lazada, Tokopedia, and AliExpress, the app-based platform built a website. To set itself
apart, Shopee provides online purchasing security through its own escrow service, the
"Shopee Guarantee," which defers payment to vendors until consumers get their goods.

Shopee's new six-story regional headquarters in Singapore Science Park opened on


September 3, 2019. The new headquarters, which is six times larger than the former
headquarters at Ascent Building, has 244,000 square feet (22,700 m2) of space and can
house 3,000 people. The building was previously tenanted by WeWork in Singapore. The
lease was subsequently relinquished to Shopee as a result of its rapid expansion. By doing
so, it strengthens its push into the digital economy.
