Activity (in your own understanding)

1. Why do we need to perform the non-destructive testing to every aircraft

structure? (30 minutes)
- For we know that in the aviation industry needs to ensure the safety of the passengers
and pilots. Non-destructive testing can detect imperfections that are invisible to human
eye it can prevent major catastrophe in the future.
2. Explain the process of the following NDT methods: (40 minutes)
a. Visual/Optical Inspection
- It uses raw human sense such as vision, hearing, touch and smell or any non-
specialized inspection equipment.
b. Liquid Penetrant Inspection
- First, pre-clean the test piece so that the cracks are open to the surface, 2 nd apply the
penetrant and allow to soak to the cracks, after several minutes, rinse the test piece.
After drying the test piece, apply developer and the area of defects can see visually.
c. Eddy Current Inspection
-It is based on electro-magnetic induction. The coil is connected via voltage source to a
current meter, after apply a direct voltage to a coil. When the current meter is stable, put
the electric magnetic tube (test piece) and then the current meter will change depends
on the magnetic field lines sudden change.
d. Magnetic Particle Inspection
-Material or test piece will insert the test piece between the two poles of an electro
magnet then she takes a bottle with a suspension of magnetic particles, turns on the
foot switch. And open the UV light and cracks can be seen visually.
e. Ultrasonic Inspection
-Is the propagation and reflection of sound waves. It shows the longitudinal sections of
atoms and simplified as a dot. A rigid stop is placed behind the test piece and the
transmitter and receiver at the front, the transmitter and receiver throws a sound wave
that should bounced back from rigid stop. If the sound waves did come back early, the
part of an early sound wave probably has defect on the test piece.
f. Radiographic Inspection
-Radiography testing utilizes ionizing radiation to achieve an image of an object on
several different viewing medias, this may be gamma rays or x-rays. First, mark the
weld to be inspected with a measuring tape, this will be visible on the x-ray. Film is
mounted on the object and the x-ray tube is setup carefully. Radiation rays can easy
penetrate the test piece and it will be captured on the film on the other side of the test
piece, and the specialist can interpret the image from the film.
