1 The Spreadsheets are based upon the Standard Method of BS 6399 Part 2 1997, and
the Wind Loading Ready Reckoner published by BSI.
2 It is assumed that the calculations are carried out by a competent person, and will be
checked in the appropriate way. No liability for accuracy or errors will be accepted!
3 Inputs are prompted by Red boxes.
4 For each project, you must firstly input the required information into the "Site Data"
Spreadsheet. This is then read by each of the other Spreadsheets to calculate loads for
specific cases. (Except "Manual Cp", see later notes).
5 The following Spreadsheets are then available:-
a) "Walls" will find the pressure difference across walls of a rectangular building, for
design of cladding panels, brick panels, etc. It includes the effects of Dominant
Openings. In this Spreadsheet you may input two Diagonal Dimensions per wall face.
b) "Overall Flat" will find the total overall lateral force on a rectangular building with a falt
roof. It includes the "Division by Parts" rules. This Spreadsheet should also be used for
the lower storeys of a building with "inset" upper storeys.
c) "Inset Flat" will find the total overall lateral force on inset upper storeys of a
rectangular building with a flat roof. This includes "Division by Parts". Use in
combination with "Overall Flat".
d) "Pitched" will find the total overall lateral force on a rectangular building with a
duopitch gabled roof. It does not include "Division by Parts". It will give the external
pressure coefficients for each roof zone, for use in element design if needed.
e) "Monopitch" will find the total overall lateral force on a rectangular building with a
monopitch roof. It does not include "Division by Parts". It will give the external pressure
coefficients for each roof zone, for use in element design if needed.
f) "Manual Cp" is a stand-alone Spreadsheet, for those cases not covered by one of the
above. The site data and building data are both required, to give values of [ qs Ca ].
You will then have to apply Cp values manually.
6 In all the Spreadsheets, loads are calculated for 4 orthogonal wind directions. The
building orientation is input into the "Site Data" sheet, (0-85 degrees clockwise from
North) and this then allocates each face as follows:-
Faces between 340-25 degrees = North
Faces between 30-65 degrees = NorthEast
Faces between 70-115 degrees = East
Faces between 120-155 degrees = Southeast
Faces between 160-205 degrees = South
Faces between 210-245 degrees = Southwest
Faces between 250-295 degrees = West
Faces between 300-335 degrees = NorthWest
7 In all the Spreadsheets, text is included in the columns to the right of the "Print Area" to
help inputs, eg. a list of windspeeds for some major towns. This is in Blue Text.
8 There is also further "extra" text, in Green, which is used for intermediate stages in the
calculations, or for the Tables used for looking up values.
9 Each Spreadsheet will produce one A4 page of printout.
10 The Spreadsheets use the BSI Ready Reckoner tables, but in a limited way. Sites are
only taken as up to 1,2,5,10 or 15+ km into Town Terrain. Sites less than 1 km into
Town terrain are taken as at 0 km (ie: Country Terrain).
