Endothelial cells under the microscope. Nuclei are stained blue DAPI, microtubules are marked green by an antibody bound to
FITC and actin filaments are labeled red with phalloidin bound to TRITC. Bovine pulmonary artery endothelial (BPAE) cells.
The prokaryotic cytoskeleton is the collective name for all structural filaments in prokaryotes. It
was once thought that prokaryotic cells did not possess cytoskeletons, but advances in
visualization technology and structure determination led to the discovery of filaments in these
cells in the early 1900s (Bi and Lutkenhaus, 1991)
Analogues for all major cytoskeletal proteins in eukaryotes have been found in prokaryotes, also,
cytoskeletal proteins with no known eukaryotic homologues have also been discovered.
Cytoskeletal elements plany essential roles in cell division, protection, shape determination, and
polarity determination in various prokaryotes (Gunning et al., 2015)

1 Connective tissues
> For example: bone or tendon
> It is the matrix – rather than the cells – that These cell-matrix junctions link the
bears most of the mechanical stress to which
cytoskeleton to the matrix, allowing the cells
the tissue is subjected
to move through the matrix and monitor
> Direct attachments between one cell and changes in its mechanical properties!
another are relatively rare, but cells have
important attachments to the matrix
> Cells are tightly bound together into sheets called epithelia

Zonula adherens (uniones adherentes)
