Reaction Paper: Designing Philippine Modernity

In the starting of the seminar, it has a video presented there are people interview about their experience
or the first impression in Philippine Sports Commission. In summary of their interview, they describe how the
Rizal turns down, the facilities of the coliseum did not maintain well, the sanitary plan also unpleasant because
of the visible pipes in the interior view of the building. In 1990 Philippine Sports Commission was created, at
that time it is the only place that can people play sports and other events. In My opinion maybe because of the
lots of events that happened in the Philippine Sports Commission the facilities did not maintained.
Moreover, because of the situation of the Philippine Sports Commission, the historians, architects, or
the people who take care of the value and principles of the community or the historical structure. They come up
and look for what are the possible things to do or renovate in the structure. They study well the site, the
vegetation of the area also, the historical features that structure.
furthermore, the seminar has a badged of knowledge that I absorb and can help my critical thinking in
terms of designing and consideration of the structures. Dr. Lico the speaker of the seminar delivered well the
content of the Architecture and Heritage Conservation. He started to discuss the timeline of the Philippine
Modernity around 20th century. Because of the Modernity of the technology and new develop materials the
structure the become new building typologies and use of standardized Design and components. Along with, he
discusses the how the lifestyle of the Filipino they are epidemic is an unhygienic lifestyle of the Filipinos before,
domestic architecture of the Filipino was not the toilet. Due of this building ordinance of Manila responding to
the epidemic the toilet, let the Filipino to a modern lifestyle. I remember, back when I was in Senior high
school, we analysis the story of “kubeta” by Nancy Kimuell-Gabriel. In this story is a good example how
Filipino’s response on the poor sanitary of housing in Tondo Manila hence, the story trying to target how the
government of the Philippines who led the country.
Apart from this, the seminar turns out in the colonial modernity of architecture in the Philippines. Were
the varied of influences of neighboring countries and the colonizers. Before the modern architecture in the
Philippines were a mix of American and Spanish colonial architecture in the Philippines that resulted in rich
architectural feats we have today. Hence, Filipinos trusting modernity but not forgetting the past. They still
value the historical facts of the Philippines and preserve it and can may adopt in concept in creating a concept.
Also, the speaker discusses how the modernity evolve from today’s life. It was nostalgic feeling that before
houses are meant to be a therapy example of this having a porch or veranda it created to have a ventilation for
the people who have illness. Moreover, there are many Filipino architect that who greatly contributed to the
field of architecture Luzon and across the Philippines. From applying contemporary architecture in the
Philippines to modifying the folk architecture in the Philippines giving it a unique touch.
To sum up, the history and the influences has a contribution oh how we perceive the Philippine
architecture and being adopted the modernity has also an answer to solve the problem in the community.
Modern progress is pursuing to introduce the version of modernity. Until now building is a prominent thing in
today’s life, building is a weapon to argue the golden age to speak, to argue the revisionist history. Architecture
is very common and yet is part of our everyday life and yet we do not realize its power.

Reaction Paper: Fruit of the Poisonous Tree

In the starting of the webinar with speaker Dr. Ambeth R. Ocampo he discussed about the
Nationalism, Histography, Juan Luna Parricide in Paris 1892. While listening I remember my
professor in Araling Panlipunan back when I was in Grade 7. It feels Nostalgic while listening in this
kind of webinar because it reminds me how the history affects our living and our generation today. I
remember Dr. Ocampo said the Cebuano word for history is “kaagi” which means “The path you have
passed” it is a meaningful word because we learned in many ways in our past that lead us in today
life.
I really amazed how the perseverance of Dr. Ocampo to study and analyze a different context of
the Philippine History because he really critics it and he delivered the idea of him genuinely. His
research about Juan Luna made me more interesting about especially in the Spoliarium. It is the one
of the masterpiece of Juan Luna, Dr. Ocampo elaborate what is the true meaning of it. In my
experience I visited in National Museum in Manila the painting of Spoliarium made me think how the
Filipinos suffer in hands of Espanyol.
To give an analyzation in Juan Luna’s Spoliarium the painting, The scene in Juan Luna's painting
is famous of Theodore's painting of the dead bodies in his Raft of Meduse. On the limit right of the
artwork, we can see a lady wearing an extremely dim shaded greenish blue dress appearance her
shoulders with her back confronting the watcher. It is preferably odd that this current lady's shading
plan is distinctive over those of the onlookers and the fighters. From her position, we can accept that
the lady is sobbing. On the left piece of the canvas are onlookers from the field. The human subjects
are consummately delivered, and sharp. The lighting utilized is stunning, and it truly gave that
emotional inclination.
Juan Luna is destined to be a craftsman. Indeed, even his sibling turned into a saint due to his
courage. Having a cherishing and an easy-going mother is a gift for him that he had the option to
communicate his enthusiasm in expressions additionally due to his strong family. I was truly
flabbergasted that Luna had the option to paint even in the cell. In any case, I was restless on how he
died, and it was a mysterious for me since numerous individuals think Luna was poisoned. However,
his doctor said that he was passed on because of cardiovascular failure and that time the specialists
or the technology were just restricted on the grounds that innovation was not improved around then.

I conclude that even before, Jose Rizal was right because our fellowship Filipino who will betray
their own Filipino. Hence, history has a meaningful works that we can use as a power for being a
Filipino. Also, Juan Luna is an example of artist that worth to remember because of his works that can
help us to be opened in this life.
