THE EFFECT OF A NOISY ENVIRONMENT


(Quarter 3- week 3)

Background Information for Learners

The word “noise” is derived from a Latin word “Nausen” which means
sickness in which one feels the need to vomit. Noise is the unpleasant and
undesirable sound which leads to discomfort in human beings.
Therefore, noise pollution is generally defined as regular exposure to
elevated sound levels that may lead to adverse effects on human or other living
organisms. Exposure to prolonged or excessive noise have been shown to cause a
range of health problems. These health problems can affect all age groups
specially children.

Major sources of Noise Pollution


Are as follows;
1. Wheels on the road (trains, buses, jeeps, etc.)
2. Aircraft and vessels.
3. Industrial machines, crackers, etc.
4. Animals sound (barking of dogs, etc.)
5. Loud speakers and transistors.
6. Television, radio, etc.
7. Neighborhood noise
8. Sleeping behavioral disorder.

EFFECTS OF A NOISY ENVIRONMENT

1. Speech interference
Interference or disturbance in conversations can result in
misunderstanding.

2. Hearing loss

Constant exposure to loud noise can damage your eardrums and loss your
hearing. It also reduce the sensitivity of eardrum to pick up small sounds.

3. Sleep disruption
It can create hamper sleeping pattern (it is recommended to take sound
sleep and not noise sleep).

4. Stress-related illnesses
Noise pollution can affect and shows signs of aggressive behavior, sleep
disturbance increase in stress level, fatigue, high blood pressure, poor
concentration, fatigue from lack of sleep, cognitive impairment, tinnitus,
headache, respiratory agitation, racing pulse, gastritis, colitis, and heart attacks.

5. Noise can also cause depression, anxiety, hysteria, in both animals and
humans. When noise is more than the normal level, it can cause restlessness and
people cannot focus well if the place is very noisy.

6. Can lost productivity.
