LISTENING NOTES

Listening is an important skill we must have because it is something we

unconsciously do and we need it to understand what people say or ask of us.

TYPES OF LISTENING SOURCES WE HEAR/LISTEN TO EVERYDAY

1. The media (radio, tv, news, etc.)
2. Songs or music
3. Speeches or talks
4. Announcements
5. Instructions
6. Conversations
7. Group discussions
8. Arguments
9. Stories

Each source have different purposes such as entertainment, information,

and expressions of thought. Active listening will help you to engage with
better understanding and build better relationships with other people.

You do not want to end up fighting your family because you did not listen.
So, what can we do to be a better listener?

1. Predict the content
Remember, when you listen to an audio once or twice, make notes about the
topic before listening. Underline keywords or describe the pictures shown to
you beforehand.

Spot any differences and be ready to find similar words from the audio with
the notes you wrote down. This is what we call Pre-Listening!

2. Complete the Information

Questions containing gaps requires you to read the header and information
given before hand. Think of words that would fit the gap.

You can write numbers are figures (8) or as words (eight).

If you are a slow writer, shortening the words will guide you to the correct
word when you replay the audio.

3. Listen Again
You can listen to an audio twice! Check your answers and
concentrate on any particular information you are uncertain of
(e.g. phrases and/or spelling).

4. Think About the Speaker

Everyone has something to say and share. So, reading instructions is the
core to grabbing the pieces of information you need and identifying the
purpose of the speech or conversation.

Some purposes include: appreciating, emphathising, comprehending, and

criticise.

Five sentences have been removed from the text below. Choose from the
sentences A-H the one which fits each gap. There are three extra sentences
which you do not need to use.

My experience at Summer school

by Francoise Armand, aged 13
Last summer I went to a summer school in Oxford to study English. We studied at a
college where adults normally study. The classrooms were very modern. In my
classroom at school, the teacher writes on a blackboard. (1) ____The teacher could
display photos or video clips on it. It was really cool.

The summer school was different from my normal school in France. The classes were
a lot smaller. We only had sixteen pupils in the class in Oxford, but at my school in
France there are over thirty five. (2) ____ It was also easier for the teacher to control
the class, which meant that we wasted less time.

The lessons were a lot different to the kind of lessons I’m used to. In my normal
school, we have a course book and we spend our lessons doing exercises from it.
(3)____ At summer school, though, we did lots of different activities, such as games,
songs and role plays. Because of the variety, I rarely got bored.

Overnight, we all stayed with different families in the city. I stayed with a couple and
their teenage daughter.(4) ____ I was forced to speak English! I had to learn the words
for things, or to go without them!

At the time, I didn’t think I learned very much in England. But when I returned to my
normal school, I noticed the improvement. (5) ____ I had got better by having fun and
communicating with English people. All in all, summer school was a useful experience
and I recommend it to all teenagers!

A I was much more confident than before.

B I shared a room with one of my classmates, George.
C None of them spoke any French.
D It's often difficult for us to get the teacher’s attention.
E Usually all my lessons are the same.
F But at the college there was huge electronic board.
G This helps me to improve my communication skills.
H This allowed each student to get more individual attention.
